May 2010 South West Building & Construction 17 ...WOOD WITHOUT COMPROMISE
Use local timber
content before treatment followed by the correct take up of treatment. This offers peace of mind and treatment guarantees which we can support with certification. The versatility of our locally grown timber is endless. With our kilns and moulding machines, we can produce a wide and varied range of products for the trade or public. In the light of our troubled economy and rising prices, we should be looking to support local industry and encourage the use of local labour and products. People everywhere use the words eco-friendly and green construction. Sometimes these are terms used without understanding. It’s not very green, if it’s been hauled, shipped and driven from Russia and the Baltic states using thousands of litres of fuel - lorries, ferries, more lorries and the daft thing is all the revenue goes to another country. We should be looking to use our country’s woodland: farm our
forests.
It is a cash crop and, if done properly, produces a superb product. We should be designing buildings using our own products, not imported ones.
Most importantly, we should be supporting our own local economy - from the forester to the haulier, from the mill worker, the salesman, the construction company to the carpenter, we should be keeping it local.
Other sectors do this whereas construction is obsessed with imported products. Why is it considered to be a better product if purchased abroad, when we are surrounded by skilled builders, designers and locally-produced materials? The knock-on effect of ‘keeping it local’ will support all sorts of associated businesses from printers to garages and accountants etc. ■You are welcome to visit our sites at Duchy or Payne where one of our team will be delighted to show you around, make you a coffee and tell you what we have to offer and how we can be of benefit to you or your company.
Meeting the person on the phone is important to us, as is
forging a relationship, so we can best support your needs. Pick up the phone or pop in. We will be pleased to see you.
