Wells welcomes you to its gardens
Wells invites you to see its open gardens – big and small
Wells, the smallest city in England and Gold Medal winners in Southern Festival in Bloom, has extended an invitation to Country Gardener readers to visit Wells on Friday 23th and/or Saturday 24th July, to see the private gardens open especially for Wells in Bloom - all are within walking distance of the city centre and range from small
town gardens to historic gardens beside the Cathedral. A volunteer group of 30 dedicated to Wells in Bloom take great pride in planting and maintaining the displays throughout the city and raising funds to pay for plants. Schools participate each year and their hanging baskets can be seen in the Market Place. In addition, their painting competition entries will be on display in the 18th century ballroom in Wells Town Hall. Admission to the gardens is free but donations would be welcome. For a walking trail leaflet please call 01749 676607or 675077.
Somerset Wildlife Trust says thanks
The Somerset Wildlife Trust raised a record sum of over £2,300 at its Plant Sale and Open Garden held at Rookery House, the Causeway, on May Bank Holiday.
The money will be used in Somerset “Protecting Wildlife for the Future”. The Trust has formally thanked everyone who was able to help either by providing plants, cakes, raffle prizes and assisting in the organisation on the day, and by coming to buy. Thanks also went to Gill Isgar and Ricky Popham for the use of the field as the car park - this of course is absolutely essential for this event at this location.
This has been tabled as the major fund-raising event for the Mendip Hills Area Group of the Somerset Wildlife Trust.
‘Come and use our gardens’ scheme
Clevedon residents could begin using other people’s Somerset gardens to grow their own fruit and vegetables. Following a boom in the number of people interested in growing vegetables, Clevedon Town Council has 165 people on a list waiting for a plot at one of its six allotment sites. Now, staff at NS Housing has put forward an idea that would allow some of those people to use gardens on the housing association’s property.
Jo Harper of NS Housing said: “Some of our tenants have gardens that they cannot look after by themselves or some are just not interested in gardening so it would be good to make the gardens available to other people. “Our plan is to see if there is enough interest from those on the waiting list before approaching our tenants to see who would be willing to take part.“
Clevedon Town Council has allotment sites in Church Hill, Highdale Avenue, Moor Lane, Victoria Road, Westbourne Avenue and next to the cemetery in Old Church Road.

Bridgwater Flower Show tries to tempt in the youngsters
Youngsters entering Bridgwater Flower Show this year will have the chance to win a £10 voucher in a bid to encourage new blood to the century-old event. All children aged up to 14 will be entered into a draw when they submit their entry for any of the Children’s classes. The winning name, to be drawn out by Bridgwater’s Mayor, will receive a £10 W.H. Smith voucher. “We presently have a loyal, but small, band of children entering the Show every year,” said show secretary Jackie Sealey, “but unfortunately they eventually get too old for the Childrens’ section and it would be lovely to welcome some new junior exhibitors to Bridgwater Flower Show.”
With the show held in the summer holidays it is an ideal time for a project. “We have classes for drawing or painting, making things, like an animal from fruit or vegetables,” added Jackie, “as well as lots of opportunities to decorate things, such as pots, paper plates and pebbles. There are also classes for making a miniature garden, cooking a pizza and photography, and many others.
“Having survived for more than 100 years,” said chairman Ken Richards, “we intend to continue. So we must do everything we can to encourage the young people of Bridgwater to join us at the Show.”
Bridgwater Flower Show will take place this year on 27th & 28th August in the Town Hall.
