Exbury voted one of top UK gardens

Thousands of readers of BBC Gardeners’ World magazine have voted Exbury one of their favourite gardens to visit – and one of the top gardens in the country for children to enjoy.

Exbury one of the top gardens in the country for children to enjoy

Earlier this year readers were asked to name their all-time favourite gardens, split into seven regions, and Exbury was voted in the top three in the south-east region, joining Waterperry and Pashley Manor.

“To have gardening journalists naming us among the best gardens in the country is terrific,” said Nick de Rothschild, whose family manage Exbury, which is run as a charitable trust. “But what pleases us most of all is that members of the public – our visitors – have given us this huge vote of confidence. It’s a wonderful accolade for the whole gardening team,” he said.

Exbury is celebrating its annual ‘Glory of the Garden’, when the spectacular Rothschild collections of rhododendrons and azaleas are at their very best.

“Exbury reaches the peak of perfection in late April and early May, and carries on looking magnificent for several weeks,” said Nick. “We hope all those who voted for us will manage to visit at this time.”

...Engine Shed walk is ready to open

Ex politician turned media personality and railway enthusiast Michael Portillo will open Exbury’s new Engine Shed walk-through exhibition detailing the story behind the hugely popular Exbury Garden Railway.

The presenter of the BBC TV documentary Great British Railway Journeys will wave his green flag and blow a whistle to open the permanent show, which features graphics, videos and hands-on interactive displays along with railway memorabilia and models.

The opening of The Dream that became Steam, the eagerly-awaited exhibition, takes place on the afternoon of Sunday 23rd May when the gardens will be at their peak of spring beauty. Azaleas and rhododendrons and many flowering trees and shrubs combine to give colour off the scale.
