Book Reviews 1 Gardens of Dorset by Roger Lane

A sumptuous book celebrating 37 gardens in Dorset- gardens large and small, gardens like Abbotsbury overlooking the sea, to Forde Abbey, to Chideok Manor but also featuring wonderful offbeat gardens. The majority but not all are open under the NGS garden scheme. Roger Lane’s photography captures his passion of the gardens in his home county with a beautifully photographed book full of stunning images. He works from his home in Broadstone, Dorset.

CG fact to remember: Dorset has always been famous for its gardens. Wordsworth and Turner have succumbed to its landscape and its heaths have been immortalised by Thomas Hardy.

Gardening is clearly very good for the soul and the spirit. The trouble is it tends to raise more questions than the average gardener can deal with. So this ‘dip in ‘book provides some of the answers. It is written in a punchy no-nonsense way by the Guardian’s green fingered guru who answers questions about everything from getting rid of Spanish Bluebells to encouraging peonies to finding a rose which thrives in the shade.

CG fact to remember: If you are worried about ivy on house walls don’t rip a live plant off the wall as the mortar will come with it. Cut the stem and allow the adhesive pads to shrivel and they will come away from the wall easier.

Some people find it easy to be seduced by clematis. There are so many different types with different looks -from large extravagant flowers to small shy bells. The authors of this stylish, colourful and specialist book which will delight clematis lovers, say they became interested in clematis as teenagers. There’s over 100 pure species across the world and as they grow on trellises, over front doors, over patios and porches it’s easy to take them for granted. But special they are and well worth this book paying tribute to them as the ‘Queen of the climbing plants’.

CG fact to remember: If you fertilise regularly but just place the fertiliser near the base you will spoil the plant and you won’t get an active root a system which spreads out.
