How the National Trust began

Victorian philanthropists Miss Octavia Hill, Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley and Sir Robert Hunter founded the National Trust in 1895. They wanted to give people a chance to get out in the fresh air for recreation and renewal of their spirits in an industrial age where towns and cities were often grimy, dismal places.

Their ethos, to protect countryside, coast and properties for the nation to enjoy, continues in the National Trust’s policy today.

Their first building acquisition was the Alfriston Clergy House in Sussex, purchased in 1896. The first property bought by the Trust in the West Country was Barrington Court, in 1907.

The first nature reserve to be acquired by the Trust was Wicken Fen near Cambridge, in 1899 – since then 40 more acres have been added to the reserve over time.

The National Trust today

Today the Trust protects more than 700 miles of coastline in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, 627,000 acres of land in total.

There are now 40 castles in the Trust’s care, along with 215 houses and gardens, 76 nature reserves, six World Heritage sites, 43 pubs and inns and since 2008, three historic hotels.

The millions of objects looked after by the Trust include the Oscar awarded to George Bernard Shaw, a photograph album the size of a postage stamp, 26 sets of samurai armour and the national collection of lawnmowers!
