Street Kids International
STREET KIDS INTERNATIONAL is a non-profit agency founded in Canada that is a global leader in developing and disseminating the strategies and tools needed to give street kids around the world the choices, skills and opportunities to make a better life for themselves. We engage and support street active youth through local partnerships with youth serving organizations. Our local partners are trained in using effective and adaptable tools that address the constantly changing needs of youth. These tools serve to empower street kids in improving health, economic status through entrepreneurship and savings knowledge and their rights. Having worked with more than 2 million street kids in over 60 countries, Street Kids International has been recognized by the United Nations as a Global Best Practice Leader in youth work.
Our Mission Street Kids strives to help street kids internationally become healthy, self- sufficient and respected. We build on the resilience of street kids with relevant programs to improve their quality of life and advocate and deliver innovative programs, so effective that they are spontaneously adopted, adapted and shared by our worldwide network of partners.
Our Resources Through our partnerships, Street Kids International has developed a variety of resources to engage youth both internationally and domestically in understanding the issues surrounding youth and poverty.
Street Talk Street Talk is a program created to engage students, teachers, and interested individuals in four live learning sessions broadcast over the internet and phone. Audiences were given the chance to listen to field experts from around the world discuss issues such as HIV/AIDS, unemployment, drug abuse, and poverty in Canada – all with a focus on youth. English as a Second Language (ESL) Curriculum Street Kids, in collaboration with ESL teacher Mandi Gerland, has created a curriculum targeting ESL DO Study Skills in English Level 4 for high school students. This curriculum adheres to Ontario Ministry of Education standards and covers the issues facing children’s rights through a variety of methods. Students consider the socio-cultural relevance of narrative language through the reading and writing of stories and journal entries, as well as using resources such as the Street Talk interviews. They will gain knowledge of their rights and responsibilities as youth in their own community and within the global context.
