Horizons of Friendship
HORIZONS OF FRIENDSHIP (Horizons) is a federally-registered non- governmental organization, located in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. We are committed to eliminating the root causes of poverty and injustice in Central America and Southern Mexico (Mesoamerica) through the cooperation of people from the South and North. To accomplish this we work with local partner organizations that undertake local initiatives that further this goal in grassroots programs of sustainable development, education, rights promotion and political advocacy. In Canada, we raise awareness on global issues and works with Canadian organizations at the local and national levels to bring about positive and lasting change.
Our Values Strength based on the resilience of marginalized people working together for a more equitable and just world;
Partnership with grassroots organizations representing rural and urban communities, women, small-scale farmers, youth, indigenous and afro- descendent populations;
Commitment to eliminate the root causes of poverty and injustice in Central America and Southern Mexico.
Our Mandate We find it unacceptable that one out of every two people in Central America and Southern Mexico live in poverty, and face daily struggles just to survive. To this end, Horizons of Friendship works to further sustainable development by promoting alternative socio-economic structures that permit poor and marginalized people to build decent lives and achieve positive societal change. Horizons partners with over 20 organizations throughout Southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.
Our Programs In Canada, our Community Outreach Program raises awareness of the challenges faced by people in the Mesoamerican region. Activities include promotion of youth engagement on international issues, community presentations made by our staff and visiting overseas partners, and collaboration with other organizations on special events such as International Women’s Day.
