Skills Project Green – Keele University’s Sustainable Business Programme

Project Green at Keele University pulls together a unique blend of private, public and third sector partners to offer 185 unemployed graduates up to 12 weeks work experience to complete an environmental business challenge. The scheme seeks to address unemployment in the West Midlands by providing practical work experience and vocational training, working towards narrowing the skills gap in the environmental and sustainable business sector.

To date 114 graduates have been placed with 92 businesses. Reported benefits have spanned across all partners and include direct impact on skills, finances, and the environment. The University has seen the benefits of heightened profile, recruitment and module development. Companies have seen CO2

Graduates have benefitted from new skills, related industry work experience and academic credits towards a future career in the low carbon economy. 36 graduates have been offered further work opportunities as a result of Project Green.
What it means to win
Project Green demonstrates Keele’s environmental policy in action; touching all areas of University life from research, curriculum, community and business, and ultimately working towards our plan to become a hub for sustainability and a carbon neutral campus. Winning the Green Gown Award would confirm and recognise our long standing environmental commitment.
The judges felt this entry showed very impressive engagement from a high number of employers and observed a good rate of conversion of placements to ongoing work. This application had a positive influence on Keele University’s business.
