Green ICT IT is Green at Warrington Collegiate

Warrington Collegiate is a major player in the local area and can act as an influence to both local people and local businesses. Having recently redeveloped its campus, Warrington looked at a number of other initiatives varying from wind power, solar power, recycling and cycling to work. Warrington have regulated the flow of power in to the building and reduced it from 230 volts to 220 volts, saving a small fortune. The one particular project that stood out as having a huge environmental benefit, whilst having a short payback time with a lot of extra benefits, was reducing the energy consumption of our computer systems.
So to date the college has worked on: • Server Virtualisation
• Start, Shutdown, Restart • Greener Printing
• Powersave
• In-house designed Shutdown and Power Off button • ICT Recycling
The success of our projects has increased environmental awareness within the college. There is a real interest in saving energy from both the staff and the students. The next step is to offer guidance to staff and students for saving energy at home.
What it means to win
Winning would prove to others that there are both business benefits and cost savings to be had from projects that lower an organisations environmental impact. It would show that Warrington Collegiate are at the cutting edge technology-wise and that our hard work has paid off.
The judges were very impressed and encouraged to see a FE college punch well above its weight in this category. Warrington Collegiate demonstrates a very wide ranging portfolio of Green ICT activity which really pushes the agenda further and wider in FE.
