From pip-to-tree, embedding sustainability at Kingston is a collegiate journey. Driven initially by individual grass roots activity, sustainability is now an acknowledged Senior Management remit for the University.


Since the 2002 formation of a consortium of academics, support staff, estates and facilities managers and student representatives (the Steering Group for Sustainability), sustainability has permeated all areas at Kingston.


Real-world sustainability has been promoted through new courses, research and consultancy; has been embedded into curricula, campus management and governance; business and community links have been established and utilised. External awards, large and small, local and national, have followed.


Sharing the journey has been Kingston’s hallmark, from in-house debate and action to presentations at national and international events, Kingston’s people have sought to contribute and promote the sustainability agenda. In 2009 the University established a Sustainability Hub to coordinate these activities more effectively from a core position.


The tree is blossoming.


What it means to win The ‘dream come true’. Winning would confirm the relevance and importance of our vision for Sustainable Kingston to everyone who has supported us. Winning would show that the small actions of individuals and lobbying of ginger groups really can make a difference. Change need not always begin at the top.


This was a strong story of institutional change that showed a wide range of sustainability activity. The judges were particularly impressed with how sustainability had permeated all areas at Kingston University
