They’ve been observing and recording the gradual growth of caterpillars that will soon emerge from their chrysalises and become beautiful Painted Lady butterflies. Shortly after, students will set the butterflies free and watch them fly away. There are also many future gardeners in Grade

1. They’ve planted green bean seeds, watered them, and watched their growth from seed to healthy young plants. Hopefully, they’ll grow even larger when they are planted at home. First graders have also been learning to navigate with map skills. Not only have they been able to find their streets and homes on our enlarged Salem maps, but they’ve also created their own maps. Here’s a sampling of their creations: there were treasure maps, neighborhood maps, maps of museums, and even an amusement park map. These included a compass rose, map key, streets or paths, and important points of interest. They had a lot of fun showing each other how to reach a destination. Grade 1 teachers and students would like to express a big thank-you to our many volunteers for their generous help throughout the year. We couldn’t do what we do without you! It has been an exciting year at Barron. Everyone has learned many new skills, worked very hard, and had lots of fun. Now they are looking forward to new challenges and adventures next year.
Here’s hoping everyone has a fun-filled summer!
Barron Kindergarten News The first year of kindergarten is winding down,
and what a fantastic year it has been! The students have all become terrific readers, writers, and math thinkers! In the last few weeks, the children have spent time learning about life cycles in science. Barron kindergarten learned all about plants this spring, as each child planted and grew his/her own sunflower or bean plant. The students learned about the important parts of a plant, as well as the things that a plant needs to grow. The children even learned about butterfly life cycles when reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The kindergarten has also been working to learn about what makes each person special and unique. We wrote “All About Me” books, and also spent time comparing how people can be similar and different. The children made paper dolls that looked exactly like them to hang in the hallway. Another way they have been learning about themselves is through exploring emotions. The kindergarten students have learned what it means to be happy, sad, lonely, angry, and jealous, and have been journaling about these feelings each week. As the final days of school come to a close, the students have been working hard to prepare for their end-of-the-year celebration that honors their achievements. The students have learned both the Pledge of Allegiance and a handful of wonderful songs to share with their families and friends. They are looking forward to such a special event to end the year. The children should feel very proud of all of their accomplishments this year, and the Barron Staff wishes them all a very happy and healthy summer vacation! Keep up the great reading all summer long!
