Awards celebration was held on Saturday, June 12, at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester. The awards, informally known as the “ED”ies, celebrate the many examples of educational excellence in New Hampshire. The event serves as a catalyst to highlight


outstanding public schools, programs, and educators. Gerard Bastien, Director of Music for the Hudson School District,


was honored as the Distinguished Music Educator of the Year by the New Hampshire Music Educators Association. This award recognizes teachers who enrich the lives of students as they master the only universal language. Nominated by Alison Yankowskas of South Londonderry and


by Nancy LaPorte of North Londonderry, Bastien was defined as “upbeat, full of energy, willing to share ideas, and [he] always had a smile on his face. A team player, he has built a wonderful music program [at AHS],” writes LaPorte. Yankowskas, District-Wide Elementary String Director for Londonderry, writes, “Gerry Bastien stands out as one who not only is a superior band director at Alvirne High School, but who also could teach elementary students the fundamental of music with equal passion. With this in mind, I enthusiastically nominate Gerry Bastien for NHMEA’s Distinguished Music Educator of the Year [award].” Bastien’s résumé represents years of learning and preparation for his prestigious honor. Having graduated from the University of Lowell with a music degree in 1976, he then furthered his education by earning his master’s degree from Notre Dame College.


He began his career in education at the Chester Elementary Gerard Bastien, Director of Music for the Hudson School District, after receiving the “ED”ie


School in Chester. Here, he was offered a great opportunity grow his skills and grow his knowledge. As a teacher of general music, he also taught chorus, planned and organized eighth-grade graduation exercises, coordinated drama/ music productions, created and implemented a Memorial Day program, as well as initiated and established a yearly Senior Citizen’s Day Concert. From there, Bastien joined the South Londonderry Elementary School, where he taught general music, band, and instructional instruments, as well as managed the music budget. Mentoring students and teachers, organizing, participating, preparing, initiating, assisting, and training reflect the actions of Bastien’s beginning days as a music educator. In 1996, Bastien was hired as the District Coordinator of Music and Director of Bands for Hudson. While responsible for the overall supervision, evaluation, and improvement of a system-wide program of general music education, he also focused on the building of a music program of instruction for guitar, keyboard, choral, and instrumental performance groups. He aligned the music curriculum with the National Music Education Standard and the New Hampshire State Frameworks, as well as created and managed the music department’s budget at AHS. In 1996, the AHS marching band took to the AHS field with 32 students who “parked and barked” during their first year. Today, over 120 musicians participate in the marching band program. Next year, Bastien estimates that the program will grow to over 150 kids. Also at this year’s awards, Alvirne was represented by the B Naturals, who opened the program with the National Anthem. Campbell High School in Litchfield was a finalist for Secondary School of Excellence and their principal, Robert Manseau, was a finalist for Principal of the Year.
