prizes, giveaways, cotton candy, and a dunking booth. Tokyo Joe’s new facility represents the third

karate school that Sensei Matt Babine and his wife, Erika, have opened in Hudson since 2005. Recently, the Babines made the decision to purchase the building at One Winn Ave., formerly occupied by Susan’s European Cafe. It was immediately apparent that the building would have to be completely gutted in order to serve as a karate school. The Babines hired Amherst architecture firm Arenco Group and Hudson contractor Dylan Thomas of Dylan’s Custom Carpentry to help them realize their vision for the new facility. The new school now boasts two spacious

training areas, upstairs and downstairs, which means that two classes can be held simultaneously, a crucial improvement for Tokyo Joe’s ever-growing enrollment. Sensei Babine is quick to point out that although his school has come a long way from its modest beginnings in a tiny space next door to Suzie’s Diner, he and his staff remain focused on the core values of family, community, and commitment. Babine is supported by a superlative team of instructors: Randy Allen, Matthew Quinlan, Marc Jacques, and Keith Roche, who are all black belts and experts in various aspects of martial arts. Babine credits Thai Kickboxing instructors Connie Lawrence, Sharon Dowd, and Samantha O’Neil with helping to make that class so wildly popular. Babine’s 12-year-old daughter Karina, who has studied karate since the age of 4, will soon be a black belt herself. She enjoys helping the youngest students, and now competes in fighting on a national level. Tokyo Joe’s Studio of Self Defense offers classes for all ages. The Little Ninjas class (ages 3 to 5) is specifically geared toward pre-school age children. The Junior Beginner’s class (ages 6 and up) features exciting karate training for beginning karate students. The Junior Advanced and Super Advanced classes instruct older children in more advanced techniques, weapons, and sparring. There are also classes

On a well-earned trip to New Britain, CT, this weekend, the Alvirne track team had nine athletes competing in the New Englands, a competition for the elite throughout the region, and came away a little wet, but satisfied with their efforts. On the boys’ side, the 4x800-meter relay

team of Todd Boucher, Brandon Doyle, Mike McCrady, and Caleb Donnelly ran extremely well and broke their school record again, but this time, they smashed the time by a whopping seven seconds. Donnelly also competed in the 800-meter run and finished as the 18th best runner in New England. For the girls, the threatening skies opened up and running in a torrential downpour, the 4x100 relay team of Stacie Nuttall, Krissy Rowe, Amanda Roberts, and Kendall Brigham took it in stride and ran to a 16th- place finish. Emily LaPlant ran in the 800-meter race – again, in a downpour – and finished 19th in her race. The Alvirne track teams were extremely well represented as they sent more athletes to this annual competition than ever before, and the athletes and their coaches were thrilled with their finish. And although a bit wet, they had fun on their successful trip.

for adults and teens, as well as tumbling seminars. One of the fastest-growing classes at the moment is the adult Thai Kickboxing class. Many of the kickboxers are moms and dads whose children are karate students. Thai Kickboxing combines instruction in martial arts-based self- defense with a body-transforming, extremely high- energy workout. Babine comments, “The terrific thing about this class is that people at every different fitness level can participate. Whatever your fitness goals, we will help you get to the next level and beyond.”

Owner Sensei Matt Babine has been studying and teaching martial arts for over 25 years. He holds black belts in both Kempo Karate and Tae Kwon Do. He has competed in men’s

heavyweight sparring on both a national and international level, and is the winner of numerous national and world championships. Sensei Babine has a passion for martial arts and especially for teaching and motivating young people. Babine admits he is on a mission to change

lives, and to help his students reach their full potential. “Our kids love to come to class, and our parents are thrilled at the positive changes they see in their children after only a very short time. At Tokyo Joe’s, we teach our kids so much more than kicking and punching. We’re helping to shape future leaders here,” comments Sensei Babine. For more information, visit
