Hudson Junior Rifle Team to Defend National Title


by Lynne Ober It’s almost time for the Hudson Fish and Game Junior Rifle Team to travel to Camp Perry and defend their 2009 national titles—yes, titles. This team has been earning championships by the fistful. Before they go, the four members of the team’s Gold Team had an opportunity to meet with Governor John Lynch and have a tour of the state house. There are 14 young men and women


ranging in age from 12 to 20 who are members of the team. All of them participate in competitive shooting. Four of them make up the team’s Gold Team. “This sport teaches a lot of good life


skills,” said long-time coach Keith Jylkka. Each participant spends a year learning strict gun safety and the basics of shooting before learning how to intently focus, plan, and think through problems. They have to learn control and train physically in order to meet the rigors of the sport. The four members of the gold team are Brian Jylkka, who will graduate from Alvirne High School this year; Brad Driscoll and Adam Auclair, who graduated from Alvirne last year and spent the recently ended academic year in college, where both competed on NCAA shooting teams; and Jessica Levine, who attends Tufts University.


In 2009, these four members won the 2009 NRA Indoor Junior National Team Championship in 3 Position Smallbore Rifle, the 2009 NRA Indoor Junior National Team Championship in 4 position Smallbore Rifle, the 2009 NRA Indoor Junior National Team Championship in Precision Air Rifle, which is also an Olympic sport, and the 2009 NRA Outdoor Junior National Team Championship in 3 Position Rifle. That was an unbelievable set of awards for one team, and they are looking forward to competing and defending those titles in July. Right now, this Hudson team is the best


four-person team in the nation. They have proven they can do it both inside and outside, where the weather tries to play havoc with the shooters.


Not too surprising, the skills learned in this sport lend themselves to helping the shooters also excel at academics. They can and do focus, controlling their

schedules and completing assignments on time and in a highly successful manner. Keith Jylkka said that it was not unusual for members of the Hudson Junior team to continue with a college education, and many, like Adam, Brad, and Jessica, continue to shoot while in college.


All four of the Gold


Team members have also won Junior Olympic Gold Medals in the New Hampshire State Championships over the last three years. Brian Jylkka and Brad Driscoll earned invitations to the Olympic Training Center at Colorado Springs to compete in both the 2009 and 2010 Junior Olympic National Championships. Driscoll has reached a rating that is within the top 100 nationally and hopes to keep competing, as does Brian Jylkka.

Brian Jylkka has been the New Hampshire Smallbore Rifle State Champion for two consecutive years, and in April 2010, he also won the individual National Championship in 3 Position Smallbore Rifle.

Hometown Boys Help BG to State Championship As Bishop Guertin lacrosse marched to a state championship in


Division I, several of our towns’ students contributed to the effort. This year the team is the best in New Hampshire and ranked 43rd in the whole country (www.laxpower.com). This year is a special year where the team went to Connecticut to play the number- one team in that state (Fairfield Prep). They lost a well-fought game in OT, 9-8. They then played the best team in New Jersey (St. Joe’s Metuchen) and beat them, 10- 9. On May 27, they played the best team in Massachusetts (Duxbury); another exciting one that went to Duxbury in OT. The team members from Hudson are Dave Perry (senior), recruited to play for Ohio Wesleyan University, Division 3, ranked 20th in the country; Matt Christie (senior), going to UNE; Brad Cunningham (junior); and Tyler Terenzoni (junior). Synchro Stars Take Third Place


submitted by Synchro Stars The Synchro Stars synchronized skating team placed third in their first competition held at the Skating Club of Boston, MA. They competed in the Beginner 1 division, competing against other teams throughout New England. The team recently performed at the Cyclones Arena Competition in Hudson and at the Gate City Figure Skating Club’s end-of-year show at the Conway Arena. The team is made up of skaters, ages 8-15, who are from Salem, Pelham, Windham, and other neighboring towns. Synchro Stars practice at the Icenter in Salem and represent the Gate City Figure Skating Club. The Synchro Stars are now forming teams for the 2010-2011 season, and you can visit our Website at www.synchrostars.net for more information on the team and synchronized skating.


Team has set an amazing 37 NRA National records since January 2009. Some of those records had been on the books for more than 35 years when this sharp-shooting team showed up, demonstrating their accurate skills. If you keep watching the Olympics, you
