by Brian J. Moran and Vineet Narang, Accenture

For the past decade, postal operators have employed various strategies to manage changing market demands. The effects of globalization, liberalization, deregulation and technological advances can no longer be ignored, requiring postal organizations to not only raise the bar on their performance, but also introduce a new kind of flexibility and agility into their operations

More recently, with the global econ- omy reeling under the pressure of an unprecedented financial crisis, fundamental assumptions about the gradual decline of traditional mail services are under serious threat— indeed, many postal play- ers have seen the most dramatic decline in mail volumes for many decades. Such findings place even greater urgency on postal organiza- tions to transform their operations in order to survive.

Accenture’s 2010 study reinforces a critical finding from our 2009 re- search—that diversification is a key predictor of high performance in the postal industry. Indeed, despite

recent economic pressures, postal organizations that employ diversifi- cation to deliver better results con- tinue do so whether times are good or bad. As a result, by breaking free from the traditionalist route, postal organizations can weather the storm clouds of the past and begin to see the blue skies of future high performance.
