There are many products and services that make up an effective and fast modern postal service. How has Saudi Post evolved its business for specific service provision in areas such as physical and electronic mail delivery solutions and does this impact on more generic eGovernment programs?


While traditional mail volumes are generally in decline, the informa- tion age advances provided numer- ous opportunities for the innovative postal operator. At the surface, is the alignment of business models and enabling systems with the re- quirements of egovernment and e-Commerce physical delivery re- quirements. In Saudi Post, we built our infrastructure from scratch to response to these requirements.


In addition, as one of the largest ever RFID projects, we installed more than 2 million RFID tags in mailboxes distributed according to this addressing system to control the pickup/delivery process via this integrated IT system. Saudi Post provided each unit with a number plate including the unique RFID tag. A new distribution division was cre- ated to provide the last mile delivery service. The distribution staff were equipped with cars and hand held readers connected to the satellite GPS systems.


The operation was supported with sophisticated route planning soft- ware that managed and supported each step in the delivery process. The investment in IT solutions in all Saudi Post activities created further opportunities including email servic- es tied up to the physical location. Trace and track services allowed high added value services to certain segments of our customers.


We have launched many e-govern- ment initiatives such as receipt of University enrolled applicants docu- ments in our offices and the trans-


fer of them to the university. With MOE we have a major project to deliver processed civil documents of all kinds to the citizens upon issu- ance or renewal.


How do innovations such as bespoke smart navigation software, standard- ized address systems, GPS and mail- box tagging control integrated deliv- ery processes for Saudi Post and how do these work on the ground?


By definition these are basic ingre- dients to any delivery process. The main integrating factor is the clear vision of Saudi Post to provide an ef- ficient and traceable service.


We have pioneered a first of a kind Postal Addressing System, which is one of the most accurate systems in the world in the field of locating an address and has resulted in the identification of more than two mil- lion postal addresses of residential and commercial locations in the Kingdom with accuracy up to one meter. The intelligent address sys- tem was designed to take advan- tage of modern technologies such as navigation developments, ad- vanced GPS modalities and sophis- ticated route planning and manage- ment software.
