Insulation expert urges building designers to consider below-
slab insulation An insulation expert is urging more building designers to consider below-slab insulation when constructing new buildings in an effort to improve energy efficiency and maximize internal space. “Below-slab insulation is the right design choice when aiming for an ‘envelope’ of continuous insulation that minimises heat loss,” said Stephen Johnson, Technical Sales Manager for Dow Building Solutions, manufacturer of products designed to improve energy efficiency. Some building designers are now turning to the approach in the UK, with housing providing an interesting new opportunity – but are finding that not all insulation products can perform in such a tough environment. FLOORMATE 300-A was designed by Dow Building Solutions to meet the challenge for residential buildings, for example. It has all the qualities the industry has come to expect from STYROFOAM – high compressive strength and design load, low water absorption, ease of installation and of course excellent insulating properties. SPECTACULAR VUE! L
eading installation company, Solid State, has completed yet another prestigious cinema project, this time at Newbury’s magnificent new Vue cinema. Working on behalf of Dicks Electrical, a team of engineers from the Lancashire-based BAFE-SP203 accredited specialist electrical company installed a wealth of life safety equipment, including a fire alarm system, voice alarm system and call system, in record time. the event of an emergency, the system will automatically broadcast pre-recorded messages and includes all of the features of larger life-safety VA/PA systems in a compact wall-mounting swing frame rack. Key elements of the fire alarm system, including aspiration units, door retainers and beam detectors, are powered by a range of 24V 3A power supplies manufactured by C-TEC. One of C-TEC’s highly versatile and cost-effective four-zone NC944 call controllers has also been installed to provide the cinema’s washrooms with alarm facilities which can be used to call for emergency assistance. SLIDERS UK 'ROK' SOLID PATIO DOOR BEATS BURGLAR!
A burglar recently found it impossible to break into a Patio door supplied to ROK by Sliders UK. Specialist patio door manufacturer Sliders UK supplied a number of Ultimate patio doors to ROK for their Templecombe, Somerset site in September 2009. In February 2010, a burglar attempted to break into the patio door, using a hammer to try and smash the door handle. The Ultimate patio door, with the ‘Secured By Design’ locking mechanism, proved too robust for the burglar, who gave up trying to enter
through the patio door after many attempts. Sliders UK leads the PVC-U patio door market, manufacturing the UK’s first ‘Secured By Design’ patio door since July 2008. Its class-leading system, the Ultimate patio door, is the first in-line PVC-U patio door to have been awarded the Association of Chief Police Officers’ Secured by Design status and the BBA’s Enhanced Security certification.
