The show:Goony Lagoon (WT) The producer:Xilam Animation Distributor: Xilam Animation The concept: slapstick toon in the same vein as Oggy & the Cockroaches Airing:Canal+,TF1 (France),Mediaset (Italy),German broadcaster TBC

Following on from the success of Oggy & the Cockroaches is another slapstick toon from France’s Xilam,Goony Lagoon (working title). Oggy has proved a big hit for Xilam and CEO Marc du Pontavice says the company wanted to capitalise upon that success.“Oggy is the most popular cartoon character in France and it has never generated as much revenue as it has this year,” the Xilam boss says.“We didn’t want to make any more episodes, but we did want a companion piece,so we created Goony Lagoon. For us it’s the new Oggy.” The storyboard-driven series has a budget of €6.3 million. It comes from Oggy creator Olivier Jean Marie who

then refined the idea with Marc du Pontavice and the Xilam team. The show follows the efforts of an island-dwelling hyena as he tries to eat a beautiful mermaid who lives on a nearby rock. He is thwarted by a shark who is infatuated with the mermaid. The cast of other characters includes a hermit crab who observes the hyena’s inventive efforts to get to the mermaid. French broadcasters TF1 and Canal+

are already on board the show as is Italy’s Mediaset and an unamed German broadcaster. Xilam, which is also handling international sales, will start delivering it to broadcasters this summer. The sales push will start in earnest around MIPCOM Jr.in October.

Disney preps Marvel block for XD

Disney is developing a block of Marvel programming for its boy-skewed cable channel Disney XD. Disney bought Marvel for US$4.2 billion late last year and is now working up original pro- gramming based on Marvel IP and will launch a branded block on the Disney XD channel, which was formerly known as Jetix. “We're developing a Marvel block of

television programming for Disney XD, and we have two series in production and/or development,”Disney CEO Bob Iger said in the wake of the company's second quarter 2010 results.“We hope that, that will expand significantly over the next few years. So we think we have a big opportunity in terms of tel- evision."

Iger did not say which Marvel prop- erties were being developed for XD,
