Plans In the Works for Veterans Memorial

Party Honors Retiring Teacher

by Robyn Hatch As requested, a low-key retirement reception party for Joyce Sherwood-Pike was held at the Lancaster Elementary School Library. This event was open to the public, and all past and current students and parents were encouraged to attend. Mrs. Pike has been a teacher in the Salem School District since 1989, and throughout her 20 years at Lancaster, she has taught first-, second-, and fourth-grade students. Everyone wishes her the best—a teacher like Mrs. Pike only happens once a lifetime.

Daniel Stacey talks with Tony Folgia about his plan by Robyn Hatch Daniel Stacey from Boy Scout Troop 267 has answered the call for a Veterans Memorial at the Pine

Grove Cemetery. Daniel will be working in conjunction with the Salem Highway Department to erect a memorial to honor all veterans that have served our country. The memorial will consist of a walkway and memorials representing all branches of the armed forces. Behind each memorial will be a flagpole that will fly the individual flag of that branch. In the center of the memorial will be the main flagpole that will fly an American flag. The walkway will form the shape of a ribbon consisting of yellow bricks— orders are being accepted for memorial bricks to be placed in this walkway. Community support of this project is strongly encouraged—please call Daniel Stacey at 490-8777 (cell) or 893-9202 for more information.

submitted by Sonny Tylus On Saturday, May 22, the Greater Salem Caregivers hosted its first-ever “Salem Caregivers Bocce

Tournament.” The event was held inside at PhanZone in Hampstead, and was organized under the direction of Mario Pagnoni, the “Bocce Guy,” who operates the Joy of Bocce, LLC in Methuen, MA. There were teams made up of both experts and novices. Many of the novices were playing for the first time, and they were amazed to realize how quickly they were able to learn the rules and how easy bocce is to play. They also found out how much fun bocce is, especially the camaraderie and the good-natured competition that takes place between the teams. Adding to the enjoyment were the refreshments in the morning and a grand pizza party with the awarding of the medals and the drawing of the raffle prizes. The Greater Salem Caregivers, who have been servicing the elderly and disabled in Salem, Atkinson,

Plaistow, and Pelham since 1989, would like to thank everyone who participated and to those businesses and civic organizations that sponsored the event and provided raffle prizes: Enterprise Bank, Coco & Early Associates, Salem Kiwanis Club, Yoga – Balance for Life, Freshwater Farms, JCH Technologies, Goundrey & Dewhirst Funeral Home, Rosie’s Restaurant, and Advertising & Business Service Inc.

Bocce is a game that is growing in popularity, and the Greater Salem Caregivers is planning to make this Tournament an annual tradition. Everyone agreed that they would look forward to playing in the “Salem Caregivers Bocce Tournament” next year.
