Friday, June 11 A concert to benefit the Salem Animal Rescue League will be held at Windham High School from 6:30-11 p.m., and will include the bands: Keep Me Conscious, The Blue Pages, The Series, The Envy Of August, Enemies Kept Closer, The Sometimes, and Flow and the Unemployed Teachers Union. Saturday, June 12 The American Legion Ernest W. Young Post 63, 38 Millville St., Salem, will hold a Dignified Flag Disposal at 11 a.m. All American flags that have become worn or faded will be fittingly destroyed in a respectful and honorable service of tribute, memory, and love. Members from all veterans’ organizations, the military, and community are invited to participate. Anyone wishing to dispose of an unserviceable flag may bring them to the ceremony, or call Enrico Casaletto at 898-1150.


This year’s Flag Day Ceremony will be held at the Derry Salem Elks, 39 Shadow Lake Road, Salem, at 10 a.m.

Saturday and Sunday, June 12 and 13 The Salem Animal Rescue League (SARL) will hold a Cat Adopt-A-Thon from noon-5 p.m. at their facility, located at 4 SARL Drive, Salem (to find it by GPS or Mapquest, use 344 South Broadway, Salem). The adoption fee for adult cats will be reduced by 50 percent, and a special discount will be offered for Senior Cats (age 7-plus) for senior citizens (age 62- plus). The adoption fee includes: spay or neuter, age-appropriate vaccinations, and micro-chips. Requirements to complete an adoption are: the entire family must be present, a landlord’s permission to own a pet or proof of home ownership, and a completed SARL Adoption Application. The event will also include face painting and special gift bags with adoptions, as well as a drawing for a special kitty gift basket. For more information, call 893-3210.


Saturday, June 19 – Sunday, June 20 Please join us to support those participating in the Relay For Life of Salem 2010, which will be held at the Salem High School Track starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, and running until 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 20. Relay For Life is a celebration for those who have won the battle against cancer and a memorial to who have not. It is an 18-hour event that brings together teams of 10-15 individuals from local businesses, schools, civic organizations, friends, and families who take turns walking or running laps. These teams raise money for cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient services. Come on out and witness this wonderful event in support of a great cause.


Saturday, July 10 Salemhaven Nursing/Rehab Center, a non-profit organization, will sponsor a Yankee Pride fundraiser, New England Tradesman Tailgate Emporium, featuring over 100 vendors offering New England- made products and services. The event will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Salem High School parking lot, Geremonty Drive, Salem. All proceeds to benefit the Salemhaven van fund. Starting Wednesday, July 21 The Town of Salem Recreation Department announces the opening of the Salem Farmers Market on July 21 at Hedgehog Park, Route 38, Salem. The market will be open every Wednesday, from 3-7 p.m., bringing fresh, farm-grown products and our community together weekly. Saturday, June 12 In partnership with the Kelley Library, the Salem Animal Rescue League will hold a Pet Wellness Fair in the Beshara Room and Lower Lobby of the library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Got a question about your pet? Come ask the experts. Veterinarians, nutritionists, groomers, and other pet experts will be on-site to answer your questions.


Thursday, June 17 Volunteers from the Salem Animal Rescue League will present “Seeking Shelter at SARL,” stories and tales about the animals they have loved and cared for, at the Kelley Library at 7 p.m.


Thursday, June 24 Jenny Milana, J.D., of Danger Milana Attorneys at Law will highlight how a Durable Power of Attorney can ensure that parents can continue to care for their child’s heath and financial well being during their college years. The talk will be held at the Kelley Library at 7 p.m.

Sunday, June 27 The Parish Community of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salem will be celebrating the Centennial of the parish with a Mass at 2 p.m. at the church, and a reception and dinner to follow at the Granite Rose, Hampstead, NH. Ticket information will be available in late May. All past and present parish members and friends are invited to attend and celebrate with us. Starting Now Salem Family Resources-Success By 6 is now accepting registrations for its popular summer Parenting & Play Groups. Parents and their young children meet once a week with a group leader for fun, age-appropriate children’s learning activities, stories, a snack, parent support, and discussions about raising children. Themes for this summer include “Up in the Air,” “Under the Sea,” and “Land Ho.” Friday field trips to local, low-cost/no-cost destinations for families with young children are also planned. Monday, June 14 Salem Youth Baseball is proud to announce the return of its Celebrity Golf Tournament at Merrimack Valley Country Club. All of the proceeds from the tournament will go towards funding our investment in lighting up the Babe Ruth field at Michele Park. Come and spend the day golfing with some of your favorite local celebrities including Rick Miller, Bill Lee, Joe Morgan, John Tudor and more. There is a fee per person, which includes green and cart fees, goodie bag, and after tourney banquet. For everyone’s convenience, there will be no baseball games scheduled on June 14 to allow for the greatest participation of parents and umpires. Starting Monday, June 28 The Salem Recreation Department will offer their popular, seven-week Summer Fun Programs for 6-9 year-olds at Haigh School and 10-13 year-olds at Woodbury Middle School, which include theme weeks, activities, games, arts and crafts, field trips, etc. Together with the Recreation Department and our enthusiastic staff, children will enjoy lots of activities. The programs run five days per week, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Parents must register their own child. Most field trip days run on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (weather permitting) There is a cost for the program, which includes State Park trips, special events, crafts, and more, with rates for two children or more in the same household. Fridays – July 9, 16, 23, 30, and August 6 The Salem Recreation Department will offer Special Needs Camps for children in grades K-12 on Fridays from 9-11 a.m. at Woodbury Middle School. Each week will offer a different activity as follows: July 9 – Track and Field; July 16 – Bowling at Park Place in Windham; July 23 – Basketball; July 30 – Soccer; and August 6 – a field trip to miniature golf or Field of Dreams.
