14 - June 11, 2010 Blue Devils Punch Ticket to Class L Finals

by Chris White For the fifth time in a span of eight seasons, the Salem Blue Devils are headed to the New Hampshire

Class L baseball finals. They will meet Londonderry in the championship game this Saturday, June 12, at Merchantsauto. com Stadium in Manchester. The game will be played under the lights as it is set to start at 7 p.m. The fourth- seeded Blue Devils earned their spot across

bottom of the seventh kept Salem alive, though. The Devils scored two runs (Yelle and Dunn) to tie it back up when Jordan Estevez (two for four, two runs scored, one RBI) reached second base on a fielder’s choice followed by a throwing error. Then, Josh Treff (two for four, two runs scored, two RBI) stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run blast over the right-center field fence to end the game, 7-5. “That was

from the Lancers with a 2-1 win over top-seeded Nashua North in the semifinals at historic Holman Stadium on Tuesday night. North took an early lead by plating a run in the first, but Salem responded in the third when a sac fly by Matt Loguidice allowed Shaun Yelle to score from third base. The score would remain tied 1-1 until the top of the seventh, when Yelle singled to centerfield to bring home Brendan Dunn from second, making it 2-1. Dunn was pinch-running for Sam Fazioli, who drew a walk to get on base. After taking Fazioli’s place, Dunn stole second base to move himself into scoring position for Yelle. The one-run lead was a large-enough cushion

for pitcher Nick Poore to take care of the rest in the bottom of the seventh. Poore delivered a brilliant performance, striking out nine batters and surrendering only one run on three hits in a complete game victory.

Of course, making the semifinals alone may not

have been possible if it wasn’t for the Blue Devils’ resilience, along with some late-inning heroics in the quarterfinals at Salem High the previous Saturday. Salem held the lead for most of the game, but Timberlane tied it up in the sixth and then took a 5-3 run advantage by plating two runs in the top of the seventh. A number of Timberlane fielding mistakes in the

probably the last thing going through my mind,” Treff said of his game- winning homer that just made it over the reach of Timberlane’s

centerfielder as well. “I was just looking for a base hit. He [Timberlane’s pitcher] just left a pitch up. I didn’t think it was going to get out. It just kept carrying, though.” Salem also received vital offensive contributions

from Joe Morin (two for three, one run scored, two RBI) and Darren Brown (one for three, one RBI). Meanwhile, pitcher Rob Liberatore entered the game in the sixth inning and pitched the final two frames to pick up the win. Salem’s starting pitcher Dan Peters threw five strong innings before that, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out two. The Blue Devils have come from behind to win in all of their games so far this post-season, including a 2-1 victory over Exeter at home in the opening round on Thursday, June 3. Their characteristic of stubbornly refusing to lose did not come about by accident, though. The trait has developed through their team camaraderie, which has propelled them to the opportunity of bringing a Class L baseball title to Salem for the first time since 2003. “We’ve played together our whole lives, pretty

much,” Treff said. “I think we want it more than ever this year because it’s the seniors’ last chance.”

Softball Takes Playoff Victories over Timberlane, Dover

by Chris White Second-ranked Salem began its playoff run with a commanding 14-0 win over 15th-seeded Timberlane in the opening round of the Class L softball tournament on Wednesday, June 2. Playing at home, Salem’s offense let loose for seven runs in the first inning and dominated the rest of the contest, as starting pitcher Nora Galvin tossed a five-inning complete game no-hitter in a match that was shortened by the 10-run mercy rule.

Galvin was perfect through four innings, but surrendered a walk at the start of the fifth to break up the perfect game. More impressively, she struck out eight of the first nine batters she faced on her way to a total of 12 strikeouts. Timberlane’s batting line-up, on the other hand, managed to put the ball in play on only three occasions.

In the first inning, Nicole Gubellini (one for three, two RBI) got the offense going with a single up the middle that brought home Sarah Frahm (one for two, three RBI) and Steph Long (one for three, one RBI). Salem then loaded the bases with two outs for Steph Cabral, who drew a walk to force home Gubellini from third base. The bases remained loaded for Sara Bracken, but she walked as well, giving way for Amanda Baron to score. In the same inning, Frahm returned to the plate and drove a ball back to the Timberlane pitcher. The pitcher misplayed it, though, allowing Amanda Vaudreuil and Cabral to score. Salem’s next hitter, Long, hit a ball to shortstop, which was also misplayed, and Bracken came in to score. Salem plated five more runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth to round out the scoring. The second inning

offense was highlighted by a two-run inside-the- park home run by Jade Morrison that brought home Julia Gray, who had reached

base on a triple to left field. In addition to that, Frahm hit a two-run double with the bases loaded, scoring Vaudreuil and Cabral. The Blue Devils moved on to host seventh- seeded Dover in the quarterfinal round the following Saturday, and won by the score of 2-0. Galvin pitched a shutout for the second straight game, silencing Dover’s bats with 15 strikeouts while giving up only three hits. Salem grabbed an early 1-0 lead, thanks to an RBI-single by Long (two for three, one RBI) that brought home Frahm. The score remained that way until the fifth when Gubellini singled to score Bracken, who reached earlier on a walk. Morrison also continued to swing a hot bat with a multi-hit game, going two for three at the plate. With the win, Salem earned the right to face the streaking 14th-seeded Pinkerton Astros in the semifinals at Concord Memorial Field this past Wednesday.
