Chantal Brosseau Recognized as Most Improved Student from U.S. Cellular
submitted by U.S. Cellular
U.S. Cellular presented its Most Improved Student Award to several students throughout New Hampshire at a recent Fisher Cats game, and sixth grader Chantal Brosseau from Hudson Memorial School was one of them! The award honors New Hampshire school children that have made outstanding progress in academics and/or social skills during the 2009-2010 school year. Based on their own criteria, New Hampshire teachers nominate students from their respective schools. This year’s recipients were honored on the field prior to the April 19 Fisher Cats game and received a special certificate for their achievement.
Free Enterprise Alive and Well at LMS submitted by Nathalie Hirte For the past five years, sixth graders of the
Litchfield Middle School (LMS) have become entrepreneurs for the last few weeks of May. This is part of their Social Studies curriculum to teach them about economy and business. As such, the students must come up with a product that other fifth- and sixth-grade students would like to purchase. During the three weeks of this project, the students learn about advertisement, profit and loss, scarcity, surplus, competition, and other business aspects. Also, they must make the product themselves, knowing that the maximum selling price is $1/item. So they must know how to control production costs to make a profit. On Friday, May 28, after weeks of preparation, the entrepreneurs finally presented their wares to the students of LMS. All were excited, including the teachers. During the selling period, the teachers go around grading the work done. The students are graded according to originality, creativity, advertisement, etc. From 9-10 a.m., the fifth graders shop as the sellers vie for their attention. This is also
when the students/sellers learn an important lesson; what sells and what does not. Some sell out quickly and know they developed a popular product. Others have to reassess their strategies to catch the customers’ attention. Some have products that are original and have a monopoly. Others are in direct competition with their fellow students. In the end, all will have learned that it’s not as easy as they think to make money.
As a parent observing the event, it has been very exciting to see how creative and energetic students are. All have worked hard and I wish I could have bought something from everyone—they all deserve it. I’m also thrilled that my child has learned a valuable lesson of how the world works. To the teachers of LMS, I am very grateful; they are doing a great job preparing our children for the future. To the parents of future sixth graders, you will be amazed at the value of this teaching activity and the variety of products—bring lots of quarters.

on America soil that took the lives of 2,973 innocent people. This is an extraordinary opportunity to obtain a piece of World Trade Center steel,” states the Port Authority of NY. Hudson’s 9/11 committee has designed a conceptual drawing that reflects the erection of two 35-foot-high steel beams placed within a grassy field that has
been outlined in the shape of a pentagon with granite. Each side of the pentagon will receive designation to honor those who perished in the 9/11 attacks: FDNY, NYPD, and Port Authority, the two flights which attacked each tower, and those who lost their lives in the fields of Virginia. “Local Hudson organizations have begun to offer their services to the 9/11 committee, and we are extremely appreciative. The vision of this project is to celebrate and honor the lives of all those who lost their lives or who were involved with 9/11. All citizens will be included in this majestic memorial,” commented Captain Morin. “The support from the community has been overwhelming, and we look forward to talking to as many people as possible.”
