Industry, government and academic rep- resentatives gathered at Carleton University in May for a major conference on sustain- able construction.


Green Building Ottawa: Retrofit: Sus- tainability for the Future, co-ordinated by the Ottawa Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) and Carleton University’s Azreili School of Architecture and Urbanism, attracted close to 200 dele- gates, says conference co-ordinator Cynthia Bland. More than half were from business with approximately 12 per cent professors, 16 per cent representing government agen- cies and 10 per cent students. “The major- ity of attendees in the government and professions were at director level and above,” she said.

The latter topic focused on materials and construction methods in traditional build- ings not found in contemporary construc- tion that could have a role in the future of sustainability and durability, the conference program reported.

Special sessions focused on environ- mental innovations in commercial, institu- tional and academic buildings and federal government properties. A gala dinner at the Canadian War Mu- seum featured Edward Burtynsky, known as one of Canada’s most respected photogra- phers. “His remarkable photographic de- pictions of global industrial landscapes are included in the collections of over fifty major museums around the world, includ- ing the National Gallery of Canada, the Bib- liotèque Nationale in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York,” the conference announce- ment reported.
