sensei ask a judo question! Dear Sensei Gi,
fInd the answer to your judo query by asking the wise, old & ever so bald sensei gi....
Can you tell me who earned the most Olympic gold medals and how many? Christian, 11, Fudoshin
Dear Sensei Gi,
I am going through my grading from 7th to 8th Mon. Can you please tell me what is the difference between ko-soto-gari and ko-soto-gake? Matilda, 10, Ronindo
Dear Maitilda,
Ahhh! What a great question. When you do Kosoto-gari use the sole of your foot to sweep uke’s outside ankle, it should be a smooth, fluid movement. However, when you do Kosoto-gake you should hook uke’s outside ankle with the back of your lower leg and drive uke backwards. Good luck at your grading! Sensei Gi
Dear Christian,
The great Japanese fighter, Tadahiro Nomura is the only judoka ever to win three Olympic gold medals consecutively. Nomura won all three gold medals in the u60kgs division, at the 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympic Games. He also won a world title - and is rightly one of Japan’s most famous judoka ever.
Sensei Gi
a koka kids tshirt!
Dear Sensei Gi,
Do you know how old Mr Kano was when he founded judo and when he died? Dominic, Kent.
Dear Dominic,
It is hard to give you an exact date, but it was in the early 1880’s - which would make Mr. Kano about 20 years old. By the time Mr. Kano was 30, he had around 1,000 black-belts, who had adopted his new style of fighting which was officially called ‘Judo’ by this time. Mr. Kano died when he was 77. Sensei Gi.
