collar & sleeve same side
Right hand takes hold of uke’s lapel but on the same side as the sleeve grip. Left hand takes hold of uke’s sleeve. You can only hold like this for a few seconds without attacking.
techniques:
This is a specialist grip that gives extra control to one side, but it is very limited. Use it when you throw with Morote-eri seoi-nage.
two sleeve grip
Take hold of both sleeves. You can only hold like this for a few seconds without attacking.
techniques:
This is a defensive grip, which makes it hard for uke to get hold of you. Let go of one sleeve and you can turn in easily for either ippon seoi-nage or O-goshi.
cross grip
For more advanced judoka.
Hold the inside of uke’s sleeve with your right hand. Reach around uke’s back with your left hand. You can only hold like this for a few seconds without attacking.
techniques:
First and foremost this grip is used to attack with sumi-gaeshi. But you can also try variations of Ouchi-gari & Kouchi-gari.
