ROWE BRITISH GRAND PRIX MANCHESTER 2010

MANCHESTER2010 BRITISHGRANDPRIX

Sports management company internationalSPORTgroup™ has announced a pioneering new agreement with Manchester City Council to stage the British Grand Prix in the UK’s squash capital for the next three years, heralding an exciting new era for the sport in the UK.

The ROWE British Grand Prix – Manchester 2010 will be held at the National Squash Centre from the 15th to 20th September and will be the first Professional Squash Association (PSA) Super Series event to be held in Europe as part of the restructured Men’s World Tour.

This latest agreement builds upon a successful partnership between Manchester and internationalSPORTgroup™ which has flourished since first staging the British Grand Prix in 2004, and ensures that a leading international squash championship will remain in the city alongside the British National Championships which Manchester has hosted for the past fourteen years.

The championship, boasting the largest prize money offered by any World Tour ranking event in Europe, reinforces Manchester’s ambition to be recognised as the UK’s leading squash city on the international circuit, alongside: New York, USA (JP Morgan Tournament of Champions); Cairo, Egypt (Sky Open); Canberra, Australia (Australian Open), Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Open); Kuwait City (Kuwait Open); Doha, Qatar (Qatar Classic); New Delhi, India (Punj Lloyd PSA Masters) and Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia (Saudi International).

In addition to the support from Manchester City Council and title sponsor ROWE Motor Oil, the ROWE British Grand Prix – Manchester 2010 has received significant backing from a host of associate sponsors including Prince, the championships’ official racket and footwear partner, Karakal, official grip, Ashaway, official string, Stellar, official clothing, ASB SquashCourts,

“We are very appreciative of the continued support of Manchester City Council and our event partners and we are confident that the British Grand Prix will prove to be a hugely successful long term addition to the PSA World Tour,” said internationalSPORTgroup™ Chief Executive Officer Paul Walters.

“The National Squash Centre is regarded as one of the finest purpose-built squash facilities and we look forward to welcoming the world’s very best players back to Manchester.

“Furthermore, the dates of the 15th to 20th September will ensure that this year’s event will be the last major tournament prior to the Commonwealth Games in India, which in turn will further raise media interest and awareness of the championship,” added Walters.

PSA Chief Executive Officer Alex Gough echoed the promoter’s comments: “This latest announcement is further proof of Manchester’s continued commitment to a world-class sports programme and it is exciting that squash should be showcased in this way. We saw Manchester host the men’s and women’s World Opens in 2008 and are delighted that we are continuing this partnership with such an important sporting city. It is fantastic for squash to have this consistency and knowing we can rely on cities and events like this to carry our sport forward.”

Newly crowned World No.1 Nick Matthew, the reigning British National Champion and a winner of the British Grand Prix title in 2006 said: “This is a very exciting time for squash and the elevation of the British Grand Prix to Europe’s leading PSA Super Series World Tour event is further evidence of the success of the men’s international circuit and great news for the players who love playing in front of Manchester’s loyal and knowledgeable crowds”.

In addition to Matthew, other leading contenders for the title are likely to include: Egyptians Ramy Ashour, Karim Darwish and Amr Shabana; Frenchmen Thierry Lincou and Gregory Gaultier; Australian David Palmer and Englishman James Willstrop.
