HARROW POWER PRO VIBE

JONATHON POWER

POWERPROVIBE DIDYOUKNOW?

Jonathon was born in Comox, British Columbia, the same home town as Baywatch star Pamela Anderson. “I don’t think she played squash,” he says. “I’d have to say: if she did, a lot of support is needed there.”

Jonathon believes the only way squash will ever be in the Olympics is through voting backhanders. “Say Japan wanted to host the Olympics, and the only way was to get votes from Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Those countries might say: ‘You give us squash because we’ll win medals in that sport, and then we’ll vote for you to host the Olympics.’ The Olympics is all about brown envelopes.”

Unlike squash players in Europe, Jonathon is something of a household name. “There was a national TV show called Off The Record. I was on that maybe twenty times. I was more popular because of that than from playing squash.”

Jonathon has been compared to tennis legend John McEnroe. Both players used to berate officials. Both players have Irish heritage. Both sported unruly hair and headbands. Both had military fathers.

Jonathon says the greatest match of his career was against Ahmed Barada in the quarter-finals of the World Open in Qatar in 1998. “Lots of Egyptian fans, full stadium, the atmosphere, the moment, the setting,” Jonathon remembers. “That was the best I ever played. It was over in 20 minutes. I don’t think he got more than five points a game.”

Jonathon has a collection of over 1,000 vinyl records. A lot of breakbeat, hip hop and reggae tracks. He plans to record his own music one day. “A sort of musical diary/documentary of my life.”
