developed with some concentrate suppliers, including bottlegreen and Vimto. Since Darenth became involved in the development of the Pouchlink machine, the design has been simplifi ed, but at the same time, the ‘wow’ factor has been achieved. Clever lighting, strong graphics and practical self- cleaning which fl oods the system with ozone overnight have transformed the concept, which also scores highly on environmental grounds as it is able to dispense more drinks than the equivalent can or bottled drinks vendor and, drawing its water from the mains and mixing from a concentrate, there is little negative impact from transportation of product.

Commenting on Vendex South, DarenthMJS managing director, Mark Simpson said simply, “Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic!” Safer Systems launched its new-look Custodian 2 cash bag. Offering all its original features, including the self-locking mechanism, the new bag now comes with a unique automatic side lock, holding the bag in place once on the funnel, making use by operators even easier, and a Miz lock, which carries a unique code for each customer. Coinco introduced the Virtual MDB

Test Box, VMTB-400, at Vendex North in Manchester. Since then, the company has enjoyed a growing success worldwide for this product thanks to its promotional fi lm posted on YouTube. The VMTB-400 is a simple solution to testing coin mechs or bill validators on a work bench or in an offi ce on a PC, with no need for a vending machine on hand. MEI unveiled two signifi cant developments

in payment systems, designed to offer its customers more choice and the freedom to

select a product that works for them, whilst promoting new standards. The show saw the UK launch of the comprehensive cashless range, CashFlow® mei-pay as well as a preview of the Data Merge capability, designed to simplify the audit process. The cornerstone to both developments is the CashFlow® 8000 - the complete payment solution - on show for the fi rst time in the UK. Energy-saving devices were on show

from Euro Payment Systems, Automatic Retailing and DFx Technology. The VendingMiser from EPS has been found to reduce the energy consumption of a vending machine by as much as 50 per cent. It uses a passive infrared sensor to monitor the surrounding area and power down the vending machine when the surrounding area is vacant. VendingMiser will repower the machine at intervals of between one and three hours to ensure the machine contents are maintained at the correct temperature. It will also avoid powering a machine down while the compressor is running, which can damage the compressor. Vend Sense

from Automatic Retailing effectively switches the machine off when no motion is detected within its vicinity within a pre-set timescale. On average, it is reported that this will eliminate 64 per cent

of the electricity that would be used by an appliance in any given week. 2eRT from DFx Technology reduces

the energy consumption of a vending machine by managing the internal machine temperature. During periods of non-vending, 2eRT allows the temperature to rise to a user-set value. Energy saving is optimised by dramatically adjusting the pull-down cycle such that the product is always perfectly chilled during periods of vending. 2eRT is ideally suited to locations where there are defi ned periods of vending, for example, schools.

The success of Vending South leaves us all looking forward to the next one - Vendex North will take place at Old Trafford on November 16, preceded by the 2010 Auto Vending Innovation Awards ceremony and gala dinner on the evening of November 15. Put it in your diary now.
