Encore Comment The return of an old favourite

What a great event Vendex South was. Twickenham proved to be a perfect venue for the southern version of this so-popular one-day trade show format. It was a venue to rival the home of Vendex North - ie Old Trafford - in its appeal as an attractive sporting venue and the ease of running an event there. Indeed, for exhibitors, it was even easier, as the exhibition suite was on the first floor so no queueing to take machines up in lifts that really weren’t designed for the job! The event was really well attended and had the sort of buzz and atmosphere that we have all come to expect

from a Vendex. So, barely has Vendex South closed its doors than we are already moving on with preparations for Vendex

North. The show itself will be held on November 16, with the gala dinner on the evening before. The gala dinner will also be the presentation night for the winners of the 2010 Auto Vending Innovation Awards, for which entries are now invited. There are five categories this year: Brand Impact, Machine Intelligence, New Vending Concept/Product, Operator of the Year and Services to Vending. You can nominate your own company, a supplier, or a customer, but remember, the more information you supply in support of the nomination the better. Entry forms are available from our office and will shortly be on the Auto Vending website as a downloadable pdf (www.auto-vending.co.uk). More news from Auto Vending this month, we are bringing back the Go-Kart endurance race challenge at the Whilton Locks outdoor circuit, near Daventry in Northamptonshire. This is a fantastic event that I’m sure many of you will remember well. Be under no illusion, there are some serious go-kart drivers in this industry! Teams of four cost £270, including a two-course barbecue lunch. There is an entry form attached to the ad on the outside back cover of this issue. Finally, from AV, the date of the next lunch for the Auto Vending Club in the South is December 9 at the Beaujolais Club. There will be a date before that for a lunch in Manchester, which we will announce shortly - watch this space.

Elsewhere, this month, the Automatic Vending Association, AVA, has unveiled some excellent offers for AVEX.

The ‘Ballot Bundle’ is a special offer available to members who apply for a stand before June 23. Among the additional incentives to apply for your stand early and enter the ballot is the chance to win a free stand, up to 50 square metres - plus free furniture loan to the value of £30 per square metre, two free hotel rooms at the Hilton for two nights and ten car park tickets for the open days of the show. For the full details of AVEX offers, see Inside Track on page 29 of this issue.

Further afield, it seems vending is getting more and more adventurous. We report in the news this month about the E.ON vending solution to its problems of distributing safety equipment and accessories to its workforce. Once again, vending proves its versatility. Even more unusual, in San Francisco, they are now vending seed bombs. I admit, I had to look it up, but seed bombs are balls typically consisting of clay, compost and seeds. They have their origins in the 1930s and are literally thrown, or dropped, into a barren area to encourage vegetation growth. The machine is a ‘gumball’ machine - or the kind you see in supermarket foyers containing a large plastic egg with a toy and/or a chocolate inside for kids.

The big event for us this month is Caffè Culture, which we will be attending with AV’s sister publication, Café Business. If you’re planning to visit the show, or are exhibiting, come along and see us on Stand S6.
