Tavistock Pioneers an Alternative to the Traditional Style Care Home

THORNHILL bungalow in Whitchurch, with 6 bedrooms, is a “Supported living bungalow”. Senior people can keep their freedom whilst having the benefit of 24 hour care and support. The Mcphie family, through their company Haven Homes, have developed the property and service following years of work and experience in the field of care and rehabilitation of the elderly. The difference is that residents share the kitchen, lounge, conservatory and private garden, whilst having their own room and front door key. Qualified carers, registered with the Care Quality Commission provide support and personal care to the tenants as needed. Tenants can lead a full and active life according to their personal preferences. Supported living for the elderly is new to Tavistock, but has been well established in Mid and North Devon.

Isla Mcphie-Janjanin, RGN, Manager says, “Our objective is to enable a senior person to live in a safe environment, to be as independent as possible with the peace of mind that help and companionship is on hand should they need it. Retention of independence, the ability to make decisions about who cares for them and how they are cared for in the daily running of the bungalow is the philosophy of Haven Homes. As the tenants of Thornhill live in their own home, decisions on menu choices, which pets will be allowed and whether or not they wish to be involved in household tasks will be taken by the tenants. They will be able to do as much or as little as they feel able. This ability to make lifestyle choices and still feel useful is vitally important in preserving physical and mental well- being.”

Susan Mcphie, Physiotherapist, explained that the bungalow has been discreetly adapted to enable the elderly to maintain as much physical mobility as possible. Raised toilets, ramped entrance and wet rooms encourage independence whilst the tenants will be given every encouragement and support to continue with household tasks that they enjoy.

Fiona McPhie explained that “the tenants have their own bedroom and pay rent, and this enables them to keep existing benefits such as Housing Benefit, Attendance Allowance and Pension Credit where applicable.”

As the unit is small and staff work in one location Haven Homes believe that tenants benefit by having the same staff around to build relationships with and the staff benefit by having the time to care as they would like to. Both prospective tenants, their family and prospective staff are welcome to come and see what Thornhill has to offer.
