TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones
If Outlook Express crashes and you cannot get any of your email messages back, there is a way of doing it. We use dbxtract, which is a free and well used program that will extract every message from a corrupt email
folder. It does take a while, but it is worth it. The secret to avoiding corruption with OE is to not let any one single folder get bigger than 2gb - or switch to Windows Live Mail or any recent version of Full Outlook which have higher limits. If your laptop or PC loses the ability to hibernate, which can happen for all sorts of reasons, then the way to get it back again is as follows, go to Start, all programs, accessories, then right click on command prompt. Select “run as administrator” and you will get a black box pop up. Type in : “powercfg /hibernate on” then press enter. Hibernate should now be restored as an option in the shutdown menu. We would advise against using it too regularly though as the system does need to be properly shut down every now and then. Most businesses use the Government Gateway now especially for VAT and PAYE. If you need to print off a P60 or similar from the site and all you get is a blank
page, then try this instead of hanging on the phone. Go to Internet Options and find the advanced tab. In the long list of things, near the bottom, untick “do not save encrypted pages to disk”. It should work now. You ought to restore the setting once you have done, but store it away in the grey matter for next year. If you have had to activate Microsoft Office a couple of times because a PC has crashed or similar and the next time you install it you get the message that the “Maximum count has been reached”, then try ringing to activate the software on the telephone rather than doing it online. You will be asked how many computers you have Office installed on and if you answer 1 or 2, then you will more than likely get another bite at the cherry. Otherwise, you are faced with having to buy another copy. Do you miss the “run” command in 7, Vista or even XP. To add it to the start menu, click on the Start button and right click on an area where there is nothing, then select properties. Choose customize, (and then advanced for XP), and find run in the list and tick the box. Or, if you cannot find that, just press the windows button on the keyboard and the letter r.
