Cornwall. Simon has covered some of the biggest stories the region has seen including the attempt to detonate a bomb in the Giraffe restaurant in Exeter, the grounding of the container ship, The Napoli, in East Devon and the flooding of the Cornish village of Boscastle. Viewers and listeners may not yet be aware that he is also the author of the Dan Groves and Adam Breen detective novels, in which a TV reporter and a detective work together to solve a series of extraordinary crimes. Simon’s work combines modern, complex and cunning mysteries with a behind the scenes taste of the life of a TV News reporter. There are jealous newsroom rows and precious egos to navigate, chaotic live broadcasts to present, and angry and emotional interviewees to placate. The books also provide a fascinating insight into how the power of television can be used to help catch criminals, something which is more common than many people realise and have been warmly praised as a fresh, distinctive and highly entertaining approach to crime writing. Simon Hall’s latest novel, The TV Detective, was published in February this year. It tells the story of how Dan Groves, the Reporter, and Adam Breen, the Chief Inspector in the series first met. The books are all set in Devon, with the detectives and Dan working from Plymouth, but often venturing into the surrounding area, particularly Dartmoor. Another new book is due out in

SIMON Hall is the BBC’s Crime Correspondent in the South West of England and will be familiar to viewers of the regional programme, Spotlight, and also to listeners of BBC Radio Devon and BBC Radio

September 2010. To be called The Balance of Guilt, it’s the first of the TV Detective series to be based outside of Plymouth and tells the story surrounding a terrorist atrocity in a sacred building in Exeter.

The popularity of Simon’s work is growing quickly and he has been invited to give talks at a series of prestigious events, including the British Crime Writers’ Association

Annual Conference, and the Agatha Christie, Daphne du Maurier, Appledore and Reading Crime festivals. We now have the chance to meet Simon in person as he will be giving a talk at Tavistock Library in Plymouth Road on 16th June and tickets for the event are available from the Library at £2.50.
