Art Rocks offers programs for all ages she feels is a dire situation.

Picasso once famously stated, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

Mary Reid is on a mission to provide a solution to Picasso’s observed dilemma as she opens Art Rocks Studio in Gilbert, a place for artists of all ages to experiment, explore and create.

Reid has been involved with art her entire career, teaching the subject full-time at an elementary school and serving as a docent at the Phoenix Art Museum since 2001. But the Gilbert mother and art educator became increasingly frustrated in the decrease or elimination of fine arts programs in public schools, as well as community offerings for enrichment, and Art Rocks Studio serves as her creative response to what

“I wanted to create a program that would expose students to art history, appreciation and different forms of media,” explains Reid. “Studies show that students exposed to the fine arts are better problem solvers, communicators and actually score higher on standardized tests.”

Art Rocks Studio features private and semi-private lessons, workshops, classes and art themed birthday parties. Parents are also invited to visit with their children and explore and create in the open studio – Art Rocks supplies the inspiration and they supply the imagination.

“Special programs can also be designed especially for your group or school curriculum,” adds Reid.

AZ Arts

www.SanTanSun.com Youths explore culture, art for free

Xico sponsors a free summer arts program for local youths ages 12 to 18 of all experience levels from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 15 through 24.

The program explores culture and visual arts through small classes taught by professional artists. Students learn art history, cultural significance and art technique while receiving individual attention and opportunities for mentorship.

Space is limited, and classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Xico is located at 44 S. San Marcos Pl. in downtown Chandler. Call 480-833-5875 or visit www.xicoinc.org.

In addition to Picasso, Reid draws on the work of Van Gogh and Lautrec as sources of inspiration for her own work, which includes drawings in acrylics and oils, primarily landscapes and still life. She notes that the Art Rocks Studio themed birthday parties are an excellent way to celebrate your child’s special day and at the same time, enhance or ignite the artist within. “The next great artist is out there,” muses Reid. “I just hope that I can provide some of the tools they need to succeed.”

Art Rocks Studio is located at 82 W. Ray Rd., Suite 2, in Gilbert. For more information, call 480-899-ROCK or visit www.artrocksstudio.net.
