Our The
planet’s most pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges demand our atten- tion. Creating solutions to these intertwined problems has become the focus of building a
secure foundation for future generations. As an institution for higher education, we must collectively ask, “How we can best utilize Stanford’s unique resources to equip students with tools for progress?”
challenges we face cannot be solved through fragmented pursuits; rather, they need to be approached in a holistic way and require interdisciplinary skill sets. Stanford University
promotes interdisciplinary pursuits, but moving forward will involve a truly robust effort to shape an edu- cational structure that infuses the strengths of problem-based learning and applied academic research. This will involve the way our faculty, staff, grads, and undergrads communicate across disciplines, exper- tise, and experience to assess, educate, and act collectively. Changing the approaches towards solving the planet’s crises demands the discussion of a truly integrated framework. At Stanford, this discussion will begin with the design and implementation of Lotus One and ROW 2.0, which will perpetuate a shift in the human built environment and its associated behaviour.
