LotusOne as a Study on Education
As a result of student involvement, Lotus One will encourage residential and undergraduate education here on
campus to adapt to the needs of the Stanford student. It will become a place of education that is characterized by active learning and applied projects, creativity, and collaboration across disciplines. Lotus One represents new a context in which students engage with information, group projects, and independent research. As a vehicle for learning, its living spaces and physical structure encourages impromptu conversations that build relationships among students and faculty. The expectation for improvement on ideas and projects continually stimulates residents and promotes collaborative pursuits. Similarly, the opportunity to directly apply and scale projects creates an incentive and investment for students to increase their understanding of the topic to improve performance and credibility. Additionally, as a biophilic facility, Lotus reflects an environment that nurtures and enhances human relationships to the natural environment, providing an opportunity for a comparative study of environmental education and associated behaviour. As a result, Lotus One will serve as a study on transdisciplinary and applied interdisciplinary educational strategies. Results from this study will serve to measure and improve the programming of the building over time with direct implications to undergraduate and residential education at Stanford.
