Scouting for
Wisdom
Bear (Edward Michael) Grylls is the 10th and youngest Chief Scout, aged just 34 years old. His achievements include:
serving for 3 years with the SAS (TA)
being the youngest Briton to climb Mount Everest (aged 23)
completing the first unassisted crossing of the North Atlantic in an open rigid inflatable boat
leading the first team to circumnavigate Britain on Jet Skis
setting a world record for the first ever formal open-air dinner party in a hot air balloon at 25,000 feet
flying a powered paraglider over Everest, raising $2.5 million for children’s charities worldwide.
“I wasn’t involved in Scouting until someone asked me and I jumped at the chance. Adventure isn’t just for young people or those of us already wearing neckerchiefs; it’s for everyone. There’s lots of talent among our 800,000 parents. Let’s bring some of that into Scouting. Just ask - that’s all it takes.”
“Every child has a right to have an adventure. Life is about grabbing opportunities. The prizes don’t always go to the biggest, the best and the strongest – they go to those who persevere. These are simple life lessons that Scouting teaches people.”
“There are 33,000 kids desperate to join the Scouts and there are not enough leaders. I want to encourage adults to get in there and
volunteer. The best message I can get out there is that if you want to be able to do the things I do, join the Scouts.”
Bear is an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. He has travelled extensively to every continent in the world and speaks both French and Spanish, and has a deep respect for diverse faiths and cultures. A practising Christian, Bear’s faith is fundamental to him, and he sees it as a backbone and a rock to his family. He lives in Wiltshire, is married to Shara and has three sons under six.
“The human mind is like a parachute; it only works when it’s open.”
“When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade!”
“The Scouting Movement is a massive force for good, touching many, many young lives. Above all, it
gives millions of kids the chance to live and learn about the wild and to
experience real adventure.”
“Never trust a man who ties his Converse up too tight!!”
