deliver a fantastic experience for players, fans and the media. Our stadiums will have zero carbon cooling equip- ment utilising solar technology to ensure the temperature is no higher than 27 degrees Celsius, ensuring optimum playing conditions and a comfortable environment for fans. This same environmentally friendly, carbon-neutral technology will ensure training sites, fan fest and fan zones are also cool and comfortable.” Qatar 2022 chief executive, Hassan Abdulla Al
Thawadi, added: “All our state-of-the-art stadia will be linked to a brand new metro system and totally integrated with a comprehensive shuttle bus network, allowing fans to travel to games by public transport. Fans will be able to watch more than one game in a day while staying in the same accommodation throughout the tournament. “We have also designed our new stadia with legacy
front of mind and, with their modular design, can be reduced in size after the World Cup to fit local foot- ball and community requirements and, in some cases, transported abroad for permanent use. What we have unveiled today is just a foretaste of the much wider plans we will be unveiling in the coming weeks.”
FOOTBALL FEVER
Qatar is not the only Middle Eastern country planning new football stadia. In the UAE, construction compa- nies are bidding for the contract for Mubadala’s planned 65,000-seat stadium in Abu Dhabi. The international groups which have prequalified for
the tender include the Arabian Construction Company, Samsung Corporation, Ed Zublin, Taisei Corpora- tion, China State Construction Engineering Corp and Consolidated Contractors Company. It is expected that the main construction contract will be awarded in the second half of 2010, after which time a scheduled completion date will be announced. Part of the Capital City District development in Abu
Dhabi by Khalifa City, the huge stadium project is set to be the largest sports stadium in the UAE and home to the national soccer team.

The stadium is designed to host major football
games, other sports and athletics tournaments, and the main features will be its retractable roof, an air- conditioning system for the summer months, a VIP lounge, a cafeteria and a 1,500-capacity car park. The piling and foundation works have already been completed by German contractor Ed Zublin. Abu Dhabi will also boast a FIFA-standard football stadium with a seating capacity for over 20,000 spec-
tators within the Bawabat Al Sharq development –the new headquarters and sports facilities for the Bani Yas Sports Club. Yet the regional stadia could be trumped by a
proposed 100,000-seater stadium in the King Abdul- lah Sports City project in Saudi Arabia. The scheme is planned to be built north of Jeddah and will include a specialist hospital to treat athletes, indoor stadiums and youth hostels.
