Course Content:

Each year comprises of interrelated modules emphasising approaches to making narrative images with creative flair and consistency.

Year One:

• Visual studies

• Illustration techniques • 2D animation techniques • Figure drawing

• Narrative formats and language • Historical & contextual studies.

Year Two:

• Drawing studies • Sequential illustration • Design approaches • Personal style and directions • Creative writing • Contextual studies.

Year Three:

• Visual process

• Business practice and exhibition • Devised creative assignments • Dissertation.

Progression Opportunities:

• Freelance practitioners or staff artists. Publishing or broadcasting industries as either freelance practitioners or staff artists. • Sequential specialists within the electronic publishing sector (e.g. computer gaming, web design).

• Further study at post-graduate level such as Illustration Practice, Animation or Film Studies • Teacher Training.

PROFILE - Ellis Martin

Ellis came to the School of Art to study for the Foundation Diploma after A levels and enjoyed the illustration element. The Narrative and Sequential specialist Illustration course is unique and Ellis was pleased to be able to find a degree which fitted with her interests exactly. Ellis enjoys the class dynamic, the exposure to many styles of illustration and the trips, including Venice. She says there are plenty of opportunities to explore her creativity, rather than just focusing on completing assignments.

The small class sizes mean we get in-depth feedback and lots of one-to-one time with tutors.
