Effective dust control is an important issue when handling bulk materials, not least because of tighter regulatory standards. Here we take a look at some of the dust suppression solutions available

ware, the resulting “intelli- gent” systems can be pro- grammed to manage start/stop cycles based on dust monitor readings, motion sensors, weather input or operator re- mote control. The technology allows us-

ers of DustBoss equipment to automatically adjust elevation, oscillation range and other fea- tures on any number of ma- chines to improve suppression performance and free up man- power for other tasks.

Strategic partnership

In announcing the new pro- gramme, Dust Control Tech- nology unveiled its finalised agreement with SMI Eva- porative Solutions for the de- sign and manufacture of cut- ting-edge automation systems for use with DustBoss sup- pression equipment. SMI is a global supplier of

ducted misting systems and high-density, low-velocity evaporators. The firm sup- plies standard and customised software packages under the trade name SmartH2

0. Designed to deliver greater

control and efficiency to dust management systems in bulk material handling operations, these advanced systems give users the capability to effi- ciently track wind direction, speed, temperature, humidity and even visible emissions data. The automated networks can

be programmed to factor any or all of those elements together and determine what combination of conditions will trigger specific system responses. “With SMI’s engineering and manufacturing expertise,

we’ve created a perfect strate- gic partnership to further ad- vance the science of dust sup- pression,” said Dust Control Technology CEO Edwin Peterson.

“Adding automation tech-

nology to our product line brings a new dimension to dust management. “Now customers with

large-scale operations involv- ing many units can exert a level of monitoring and control that would require an entire staff of operators to achieve manually,” Peterson said.

Wood pellet loading

Dust Control Technology has recently been working with

the Panama City Port Author- ity, providing a high-effi- ciency dust suppression sys- tem for its wood pellet load- ing operations. This system ef- fectively knocks down large quantities of airborne particles before they can migrate to residential areas or nearby businesses. Port Panama City operates

in Bay County in the Florida panhandle, the northernmost port in the Gulf of Mexico. The 125-acre facility has six deep-water berths and 470,000 ft sq of warehousing space. The Port is equipped with modem loading and un- loading facilities for truck, rail, barge, container, RO-RO

After successful trials of rented systems, officials at the Panama City Port Authority have decided to buy a Dust Control Technology DustBoss DB-60 unit

vessel and deep-water vessel traffic. Port officials report that the

dust suppression equipment has been very efficient, help- ing to protect ambient air qual- ity and prevent negative ef- fects on workers, as well as local residents and manufac- turing operations. “We maintain an 80,000 sq

foot warehouse used exclu- sively for storing wood pel- lets, which are a widely used biomass fuel in Europe,” ex- plains John Ramer, director of terminal services, Panama City Port Authority. “The facility receives

about 30,000t of pellets each month by rail car, creating stockpiles more than 100-feet wide at the base, with an enor- mous potential for dust” he said.

Designed for purpose

To control the inevitable dust from three front loaders with 10-yard buckets feeding a 600-foot conveyor and then dumping such a huge volume of pellets into a ship’s hold, Ramer needed specialised equipment designed specifi- cally for that purpose. While researching poten-

tial dust management solu- tions, he happened to visit a large grain handler on the Mis- sissippi River and saw a brand new DustBoss on-site. Ramer learned that the

machine he’d seen at the grain handler had the range he would need for his own ship loading application. He de- cided that the next time a ves- sel came into port, he would rent a DustBoss DB-60, the heavyweight of the product family from Dust Control Technology. “We placed the DustBoss

downwind when we began loading a ship,” Ramer con- tinued.

“This cargo is very sensi-

tive to moisture. If the pellets get wet, they tend to crumble,

so we had to avoid spraying any water down into the hold. “Once we started working,

we aimed the plume of water mist into the dust cloud, and it made an immediate differ- ence.” Ramer’s crew has rented

the equipment several times since, and the results have convinced officials to pur- chase a unit. In addition to its dust sup-

pression efficiency, Port rep- resentatives cite the versatil- ity and mobility of the unit as added benefits, allowing workers to position the DustBoss wherever it’s needed most on a given day, depending on wind and weather conditions.

The broad coverage of the

oscillating design allows them to effectively control dust over an area nearly half a football field in size from a single lo- cation.

High efficiency

Cimbria Bulk Equipment re- ports that it has introduced two new Moduflex loading chute series, designated as the K & N series. These are char- acterised by being equipped with a side-mounted filter. They are based on the

Moduflex standard series con- sisting of loading chutes for loading lighter products such as grain, feedstuff, powders and granules, as well as heavy duty loading chute series for products such as cement, lime, coal and fly ash or other abra- sive products. The design of the K & N

series is based on customer requests for a loading chute which meets the demands for a low built-in height and a larger filter areal. The side- mounted filter is characterised by being very service kind as it provides easy access to re- placement of filter units and magnetic valves. The chutes can be supplied

in various diameters and the side-mounted filter area can be from 9 - 24m. Furthermore, the chutes are available with a wide range of accessories which all together make the chutes suitable for various

has already delivered more than 100 loading chutes of these specific applications, and the series are therefore well-tested and proven. With the launch of these new series, Cimbria Bulk Equipment ex- pands their opportunity to offer solutions for solving a vast variety of loading tasks – all with dust elimination as a key parameter.

Filtration system

Elsewhere, Donaldson Torit reports that its PowerCore CP Filter Packs provide better fil- tration than traditional filter bags. Manufactured

by

Donaldson Company a lead- ing worldwide manufacturer of filtration systems, PowerCore Filter Packs com- bine Donaldson’s proven and patented Ultra-Web nanofibre surface-loading technology with a corrugated, fluted me- dia configuration that allows more media in a small vol- ume, providing high par- ticulate efficiency and easy maintenance. The smaller, lightweight

Filter Pack design includes built-in-handles for easier and faster changeouts. These require only a few minutes and no tools, which is unlike traditional filter bags that can take several hours to change.

Manufacturers can expect

a reduction in maintenance costs because one PowerCore CP Filter Pack can do the work of six traditional filter bags, says the company.

Anti-static version

The PowerCore CP Filter Packs are now available in standard and anti-static ver- sions, both with Ultra-Web nanofibre media. The new PowerCore Anti-Static (AS) CP Filter Packs are ideal for applications where electro- static charges can be a hazard. Using an anti-static version

of Ultra-Web media, the PowerCore AS CP Filter Pack meets standards for anti-static performance, with a surface resistance less than 108

ohms

(measured per ESD STM 11.11-2001). Additionally, the release of

the PowerCore AS Filter Packs goes hand in hand with an option for grounding and bonding of the Torit PowerCore CPC and CPV dust collectors. Introduced in September

of 2008, the Torit PowerCore CPC and CPV dust collectors combined with the award- winning PowerCore Filter Packs have successfully out- performed traditional bag- house and bin vent collectors in a variety of industries, in- cluding grain, cement, plastic and wood, says Donaldson

Torit. 
