Cargo Handling

are based on proven hydrau- lic excavator platforms, but adapted for port handling with pantographic cabs, a wide range of attachments and special load curves. Terex and Liebherr have

a presence in this market, through Terex-Fuchs and Liebherr Litronic. Other leading names include Mantsinen, Multidocker and Sennebogen. Last year Cemex UK, a

leading building materials provider, acquired the first Sennebogen Green Line 870R HD crane to be shipped to Great Britain, for operations at its Battersea wharf on the River Thames in London. The £0.5M crane, supplied

through Sennebogen’s UK dealer Hassell, runs off mains power as opposed to diesel, to reduce ambient noise levels and avoid local emissions. It is the first Sennebogen to be used in an inland water loca- tion in the UK. The machine has a self-

weight of 87t and can handle up to 450 tph of aggregates. Cemex transports 4-5 barge loads weekly from its Thames Estuary plant at Northfleet, which processes marine ag- gregates. The barges have a capacity of 750t and have to be unloaded within a 2-hour time window because of tidal conditions on the River Thames. The discharged sand and

stones are used at Cemex’s adjacent ready mixed concrete plant, which supplies con- struction materials for build- ing projects in London. The crane was manufac-

tured in Straubing in Bavaria and, for the final part of the journey, was shipped by barge from Erith to Battersea. The timing of the loading and un- loading also had to be care- fully planned to catch the tides.

MultiDocker delivers

MultiDocker (Österströms) recently delivered a MD CH65 (Gantry) to Logistique de L’Atlantique in Bayonne, France. The machine is used to handle the large amount of timber resulting from Hurri- cane Klaus that struck south- western France in January 2009, devastating the forests of Les Landes. Last November a new

MultiDocker CH65C was delivered to Tate & Lyle Sugars Ltd at its Thames Refinery. This machine is used for discharging biomass materials for feeding Tate & Lyle’s new internal power generating station and for loading out big bags of refined sugar products for delivery by ship. As previously reported,

Multidocker recently deliv- ered a CH65 to RMS in Hull, capable of working ships up to 9000 dwt and another UK contract was signed recently, this time for a CH65C with Scotlog Sales in Inverness. The new machine will be

supplied as a replacement for the existing MultiDocker CH65B (series II) originally provided to Scotlog in January 2005.

The machine is scheduled

for delivery this April. Being the latest generation, the MultiDocker CH65C will provide Scotlog with the new design and enhanced benefits of a cabin with greater glass area giving better visibility than before, a new hydraulic control system and joysticks with even smoother more precise driver control. In addition, new plat-

forms and safety gates en- sure easier and safer access and the gantry has an inte- grated fuel storage tank.

Last December a new

CH65 Gantry was delivered to the Port of Skellefteå in northern Sweden, for handling sawn timber, round wood and scrap. Finally, MultiDocker is

expanding its product offering with the development of the CH65 E-power. The launch customer is Heidelberg Cement. The machine will be

equipped with a gantry undercarriage adjusted to the railway tracks and running off mains power. The electric material handler

followed Mantsinen, which branched into rail-mounted versions of its hydraulic cranes with the first delivery of a model 140 ER, mounted on a portal with a 14m rail span, to an operator in Duisburg in 2006. Since then rail-mounted Mantsinen cranes have proved a popular alternative to crawler and rubber-tyre undercarriages. 
