The Trade Show for Kids' First Years

16 – 19. SEPTEMBER 2010

Lori Kanary

Paul Budnitz

That is what happened to designer toy artist Paul Budnitz whose work was chosen for permanent inclusion in the Museum of Modern Art (www.paulbudnitz.com).

While you are at it, consider the work of artist Lori Kanary. Lori works in Lite Brite pegs and uses them to create pointillist art (Think Seurat’s ‘Afternoon’ in the Park) or impressionist work like her Monet’s Impression Sunrise. You can learn more about Lori at www.kanaryart.com And then there are the toys themselves. A picture does not really do justice to the plush Mr. Night from YOTTOY. I think the term ‘plush sculpture’ is a better term to describe this wonderful piece. I would love to see our professional institutions do more to showcase toys as art and toys as elements in art. It would be fun to have some space at our trade shows devoted to this type of the purely aesthetic. It could be in a quiet place accompanied by nice music, soft murmuring conversation and a little wine. It would certainly make for a nice respite.

And while we are at it, why not sell some of this work as a way of raising funds for our charities. Perhaps a percentage of each purchase could go to help art programmes in schools. Whatever we do, let’s take the time to enjoy the more aesthetic side of the industry we have chosen. It will be good for our souls and maybe good for our business as well.
