his month, I am highlighting our outdoor department and staff, and building on the feature that was published in the May

issue of The Winged

M. The outdoor department serves as the umbrella for cycling, golf, Outdoor Activities Program,

ski, and walking and hiking. The outdoor department and one of the areas it encom- passes, Outdoor Activities Program, are frequently confused. OAP includes the Rock Wall, rafting trips, scuba lessons and the like, while the outdoor department oversees most athletic activites occurring outside the club walls, including OAP. Chad Failla leads the department. Jesse Scroggins coaches MAC skiers and coor- dinates instructors and member coaches on the slopes. Peter Julia and Michael Brown head our rock climbing staff. Linda Starr, an integral part of MAC for more than 20 years, guides the Walking & Hiking program. Sarah Burchard (cycling and ski), Kellie Halkinrude (golf and OAP) and Matt Mastrantuono (Walking & Hiking) serve as program admins. A quote from last year’s annual survey is typical of member comments on these programs: “The athletic staff is excellent, friendly and informative. A special commenda- tion to Linda Starr, who gives more than 100 percent in overseeing Walking and Hiking, aspects of aquatics [water exercise] and every- thing with which she is involved.” MAC golf is a popular outdoor department

program, with events at area courses such as Quail Valley, where the club has its annual MAC Scramble Friday, June 18. This fun event is for all ages and levels of play. We also work with other clubs to offer

opportunities for MAC members. For example, the Reserve in Aloha offers special discounts to MAC members; and members can reserve and play Broken Top Country Club in Central Oregon at the guest rate without a member. Regardless of your outdoor interest, the

outdoor department at MAC most likely offers something to satisfy it. Visit the theMAC.com to learn more. I look forward to seeing you around (or outside) the club this month. WM
