Tennis Begins New Committee Year with Enthusiasm
T
he Tennis Committee is pleased to welcome the energy and enthusiasm of seven new members for 2010-11. Because the MAC tennis community is a diverse population, the committee seeks to draw representatives from all the major demo- graphic sectors that enjoy this game. All of these folks are regular and active players at the club. Head Pro Wayne Pickard continues to give direction and support. The committee welcomes feedback of any kind – positive, negative or neutral – concerning tennis activities and facilities at MAC. Members may contact the committee through the Tennis Committee page on the MAC website, or just catch the members between sets at the club.
The committee is continuing to pursue early completion of the tennis viewing lounge to be constructed at the east end of Court 1. A second major initiative is the full implementa- tion of the online reservation system. A few users report glitches in the system, and the evaluation and use of member reservation data is yet to be maximized. Reducing unused court time is one possible benefit of this system.
One of the committee’s major objec- tives is to implement improved methods and programs to enhance the development and retention of top junior players. The committee seeks to develop a more robust program to encourage the participation of mid-level and high school players. At the adult level, the committee is
promoting the continued increase in club tournament and inter-club play. How can the committee make these events more attrac- tive? Committee members are seeking players’ feedback on such particulars as the length of these events, the cost, the offered amenities, awards, shirts, refreshments and the frequency of the events.
It’s barbecue time again
Chef Wayne Pickard is ready to fire up the ol’ barbecue for burgers and hot dogs with all the fixins’, along with everyone’s favorite beverages, to inspire players to greater tennis exploits (or at least tales of such exploits). These are always high-spirited social and

Williams represents in Mexico
Good sportsmanship may have been
strained to the limit, but it survived intact at the 2010 Italia Cup Championships held in March and April at the Federacion Mexicana de Tenis in Mexico City, according to MAC member Dougal Williams, captain of the men’s 35 team representing the United States. The Italia Cup is the annual International Tennis Federation Senior World Team Championship for male tennis players age 35 and older.
Williams, a veteran of international
tennis competition, was selected as captain of a four-man squad. Each team plays two singles matches and a doubles match against the opposing country’s team. Team USA defeated Australia, Columbia and Argentina by identical 3-0 scores in round-robin pool competition. Williams went undefeated at the No. 1 singles position, winning all three of his matches in straight sets. In the only match he lost all week, William was defeated by Spain’s No. 1 player, who did not lose a match in the championships. In a hard-fought doubles contest, USA lost 6-3, 7-6. The USA team went on to defeat England 3-0 to take the bronze medals. For the full story in all its gory detail, look
up the USTA Pacific Northwest website for the Dougal Williams blog. The entertain- ment value is worth the effort. For more information on MAC tennis, call
