ATHLETICS
MAC Student Works Toward Black Belt
A
lex Hassen says that his karate training has helped him focus and prioritize
the many activities in his life – and they are many. Since 2001, 16-year-old Hassen has been training regularly with the Japan Karate Federation schools in the Portland area, and he has been an athletic member at MAC for most of that time. In addition to karate, Hassen enjoys
lacrosse and has been a competitive soccer player in the past. Hassen credits his karate training with helping him be fi t and have great body control that is required for the sport. He is well ahead of his peers every season, since he trains in karate all year and never lets himself get out of shape. Hassen also has embraced the karate
lifestyle. He sees the value in working toward a long-term goal; taking small steps to get to a larger goal that many his age don’t have the discipline and patience to achieve. Hassen also likes the camara-

derie of karate training. Even though it is an individual sport, everyone trains together and pushes each other. When a person is training for a big tournament or belt test, everyone in the dojo (club) rallies around them to make them train harder. This is part of the karate way.
Besides ongoing training in
the dojo, Hassen has attended seminars with well-known instructors from around the country, and has competed in 15 local tournaments. He is also an honor student at Oregon Episcopal School and has a long list of outside activities and achievements. He has become a great role model and mentor to the young adult students in the karate program. This fall, Hassen and two other MAC students test for their fi rst-degree black
belt, or Shodan rank. This is a huge mile- stone that Hassen has worked toward for more than half his life. There will be much sweat and hard training this fall – and the MAC karate family is right behind Hassen all the way.
Members are invited to join the MAC
karate family. New classes form the fi rst Tuesday of every odd month. To register, contact Integrative Fitness at 503-223-6251, ext. 539, or go to
