Balladeers Harmonize Before Summer Break

T

he MAC Balladeers look back with fond memories of their 2009-2010 season. The men gather for brunch and some harmonizing Sunday, June 6 before they take their summer hiatus. The group resumes in September.

Community outreach and in-house performances are hallmarks of the

Balladeers’ mission. A moving experience of the year was the annual luncheon of the Edwards Center, a non-profi t support group for Oregonians with developmental diffi culties. The Edwards Center Casual Singers joined the

Balladeers for a

short set of oldies. The Balladeers also did a repeat performance at the annual Loaves and Fishes fund- raiser, and presented a

rousing version

of the national anthem at the Portland Beavers game May 20.

The second annual Brothers Sing On concert involving the Balladeers and four other men’s vocal groups at Cleveland High School was held this spring. A signif- icant benefi t of this concert is showing high school singers that there can be music in people’s lives no matter where life leads them.

Next season is the 70th year for the Balladeers, as well as Director Roger Doyle’s 35th year with the group. His enthusiasm is infectious and his teaching gentle and persuasive. A highlight of the new season is a commemorative concert at MAC to celebrate these milestones. New men are welcome to the Balladeers. There are no auditions, no prerequisites other than the enjoyment of singing, and top tenors are espe- cially welcome. Rehearsals start up next September.
