South Alberta Pipes and Drums
There has been a pipe band in Medicine Hat since as far back as 1912. In its early days, under Pipe Major Alex Hosie, it was known as the Medicine Hat Pipe Band. In 1928, it became affiliated with the Legion as the Canadian Legion Pipe Band of Medicine Hat, with "Royal" added when it was granted to the Legion itself. In both world wars, pipers and drummers from the band served in the Canadian army. A new era started in 1960 when Bill Cowan took over as Pipe Major. The band struck out on its own in 1966 as the South Alberta Pipe Band. The current era began in 1980 with Eric Kean as Pipe Major and the new lighter style of uniform replaced the heavy military uniforms. In 2004, the band reincorporated as the South Alberta Pipes and Drums and typically counts about 8 pipers and 6 drummers. The band performs mainly in southern Alberta and Havre and can be heard at many community events. For more information, go to the band's website at www.
