Get Organized For Success
“The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand.” - Frank Herbert, author
As spring semester exams loom, expressions like, ‘I’m lost,’ ‘I haven’t learned a thing this semester’, or ‘big exams are too hard’, etc. echo across campus. It is very rare to hear, ‘I love to study’, ‘I am organized for exams’, or ‘I understand what I am supposed to do’.
The reality of getting ready for exams takes the willingness to face fears and confusions. Students can meet with their teachers to ask how to best prepare for exams. Students can set aside 30 minutes a day to get notes organized for study. Families can make exam study a carpool and/or a dinner table discussion or game.
Juniors (soon-to-be-seniors), now it’s your turn! Read about different universities, visit schools, request information and applications, and get excited about college. The important thing is that you do something, because the clock is ticking and the more time you take to prep now, the happier you’ll be in the fall. You should already have your list of 7-8 schools you’ll be applying to and be working on your applications and essays this summer, so if you still aren’t sure where you are going to apply, see Ms. Castro for help developing your list.
Juniors can schedule a one-on-one meeting with Ms. Castro and their parents after attending a College Admissions workshop. Students (not parents) must be the ones to schedule the appointment in person, because they will be given some assignments to do before the meeting. Workshop dates are on the College and Career Planning calendar at
www.materdei.org/ccrc.
Freshmen & Sophomores, it’s not too early to start preparing for the future. Summer is a great time to begin learning about and visiting different colleges and types of schools. Taking a trip to Boston, San Francisco, Toronto, or Miami to visit relatives? Add a day or two to your trip and visit some colleges while you are there. If you’re not sure what schools to see, what you should be looking for or whom you should be talking to when you are there, please see Ms. Castro for suggestions.

Students who use the Learning Center say that organizing class study groups is really helpful, especially before big tests. AAP teacher tutoring on campus (free) is a great way to set aside time for study. Creating one’s own exam before in-depth study time can aid focus and memory. Most of the time student-made exams are more difficult than those of their teachers. To succeed and not just get by or hope for the best takes asking questions and being positive about the task at hand. Don’t wait until the last minute, eat and sleep well, find times to laugh and get started with studying. Summertime is your reward for a job well-done.
Invest in your personal growth. Come discover all that the Muth Family Learning Center has to offer you. For more information or to discuss your student’s needs, contact Marilyn Wilson, Director at mwilson@materdei. org or JoAnn McCune, Learning Specialist at jmccune@
