One of the main factors that have made this open source approach to

product design and manufacturing possible is the development of digital manufacturing technologies, such as computer controlled routers and rapid proto-typers, which make it much easier for designers to share files and collaborate over designs. These technologies manifest physical parts directly from 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) files or 3D printing, where the 3D printed parts are to be used as the final product itself with little requirement for post-processing. Re-form Furniture even offer an open source design for a simple computer controlled router (CNC Router) which can be constructed by anyone and utilises open source software to cut complex designs. So, not only can you make a piece of furniture for yourself, but you can also design the machinery needed to make it.

This kind of small scale digital manufacturing is taking the DIY approach to the next level, and it is also a way of reducing CO2 emissions. It enables the production of a greater variety of products for local markets, which in turn cuts down the need for products to be transported over vast distances from central manufacturing sites. So, you can make your own furniture and products and modify them as you desire, safe in the knowledge that you are also doing your bit for the environment!
