REVIEW: 101 Great Ways to Sew a Metre by Rebecca Yaker and Patricia Hoskins

by Emma Rafter of www.yumptatious.blogspot.com

ISBN: 9780715337783 This is the perfect book for those of us guilty of hanging ponderously onto fabric remnants, awaiting the perfect project. It is, however, a loosely-anglicised version of last year’s ‘One-Yard Wonders’: despite the metric title, it’s imperial all the way inside.

It is true to its 101 remit, though: 101 patterns with all the basic techniques needed to create the projects that lie there within. The patterns actually come from a large body of makers, not just the authors, Rebecca Yaker of Hazel and Melvin’s Room and Patricia Hoskins, co-founder of Crafty Planet but the book remains cohesive and you are bound to find something to liberate that fabric stash to an inspired purpose.

Some pieces were a little too twee for my cynical tastes (they really do favour a frilly garnish) but the patterns can easily be tweaked to suit. I particularly loved ‘Hey Hot Dish’, a cunning insulated cover to help transport your goulash in style. The ‘Obi – Inspired Hot & Cold Pack’ is stylish, practical and just this side of bizarre, because one shouldn’t let one’s style slip just because one’s in excruciating pain.

As well as a hefty section devoted to children’s items, there are also a few pieces suited for the men folk, such as the ‘Mini Craft + Tool Belt’ and ‘Matt’s Map Bag’, though far be it for me to keep him away from the ‘Strapless Belt Tunic’. However, I remain unconvinced that spats will be making a comeback, despite the authors’ enthusiasm.
