MEET: Rachelle Strauss (AKA Mrs Green)

At what point did you decide that you needed to address the amount of waste you were producing as a family?

It all started after our holiday in Boscastle, Cornwall where we were caught in the biggest flood recorded on mainland Britain. When we came home, I set up the Gloucester FreeCycle group. Then a couple of years ago, an article was written about the effects of plastic on marine life (article link: ht tp: / /www.guardian. co.uk / env i ronment / 2 0 0 7 / s ep/ 1 6 / pollution.travelnews) . Reading this article acted as a catalyst to galvanise our resolve to reduce the amount of

waste we produced.

When you decided to begin this way of life, did it take long for you to get into the swing of things?

We took things slowly over an 18 month period. Starting off with re- useable carrier bags and gradually building up our efforts by using kerb side recycling facilities, then moving into local recycling options.

Is there any item that is particularly difficult to recycle or re-use?

Yes, we find unmarked plastic difficult to recycle because until we know what the material is, we don’t know how to responsibly dispose of it.

What is your main goal for the next 6 - 12 months?

In 2009 we managed to reduce
